Usually, especially in winter, they start the engine on the so-called pride. However, it turns out that this method is not recommended, as it can damage the car.

About "pride"

When starting a car using the pride method, some car components are subjected to more stress, especially the gas distribution and drive systems. In the case of timing systems based on a toothed belt, timing misalignment or, in extreme cases, a broken belt can occur.

This is especially true for vehicles in which the timing belt is already worn out or incorrectly tensioned. Some manufacturers generally prohibit starting the vehicle in this way. It is no wonder that a broken belt or a change in the timing phases can have serious consequences - bend the valves, damage the pistons and the head. When the camshaft is chain driven, the danger is much less. However, when the chain is worn, it can also break when you try to start your car proudly. The risk of damage to the valve timing mechanism when igniting smoke is higher in vehicles with a diesel engine.

Mention should also be made of the negative impact of this starting method on the drive system. In particular, the clutch disc and especially its damping elements are subjected to significantly greater stress. Summing up, we can state that this method of starting does not affect the durability of the engine, but can lead to failure of the gas distribution system or drive.

Another problem is the possibility of destruction of the catalyst. In front of a push-start car, fuel can enter the exhaust system, causing irreparable damage. In this case, it loses its properties and the car fails the exhaust test. And a new catalyst costs at least a few hundred zlotys.

Therefore, starting the engine can be very costly. It is better to localize and eliminate the cause of the malfunction - most often the "culprit" is the electrical system (battery, starter) or borrowing electricity from another car using starter cables.
