Tips for motorists

Body degreasing is a necessary step in car painting

Try spraying some silicone spray on the body and then wet the area with water. Water rolls off and doesn't stay on the surface? Correctly! In the same way, paint will roll off during painting work. All surfaces must be dry and clean before painting. To achieve this result, it is necessary to degrease the planes of the car intended for painting with high quality.

Degreasing car surfaces before painting

Healthy interest, the desire to gain new experience and the opportunity to save some money - these are the main motives of motorists who decide to do body repair on their own. To paint a car correctly and without errors, you need to know some of the subtleties of the technology of this process. Some of its aspects, such as degreasing, are not obvious. If you ask the question: “Why degrease a car?”, Most garage craftsmen will not really answer it. But neglecting degreasing can spoil the result of all work.

Repair work procedure

Body repair technology is something like this:

  • clean the surface of the dent;
  • if necessary, glue the adjacent parts;
  • we straighten dents with hammers, punches, a spotter (as convenient and familiar);
  • we give the most even shape to the metal - degrease it and prime it using epoxy primer. It does not conduct air, so the oxidation process will not develop so quickly;
  • apply a layer of insulating primer. This is necessary, since putty will not take well for epoxy primer;
  • we level the dents, filling it with putty;
  • degrease the surface, apply another layer of soil;
  • apply a layer of developing paint, clean the soil;
  • getting ready for painting - degrease the surfaces, stir the paint, paste over the mating surfaces;
  • I paint the car.

The final step is polishing, after which you can enjoy a job well done.

In this chain of actions, degreasing is mentioned three times. The most important stage when degreasing is simply necessary is the preparation of the body before painting. Neglecting this step may result in raised or shrunken patches of paint.

Why degrease the body before painting

Paint and other substances do not wet greasy surfaces. Therefore, after drying a poor-quality fat-free body, the paint swells up with craters, wrinkles appear.

What fat is found on the surface of the paintwork?

  • fingerprints;
  • traces of stickers and adhesive tape;
  • residues of silicone sprays and protective polishing compounds;
  • bituminous spots;
  • not completely burned diesel fuel or engine oils.

No paint, no protective film, no glue will stick to greasy areas. If the fat is not removed, then there is a possibility that all the work will have to be redone.

Washing machine to remove grease

The first thing to do before starting a body repair is to thoroughly wash the body using powerful surfactants (such as dishwashing detergent). This operation will make it possible to wash off fingerprints, oil residues and other technical fluids.

The next stage is carried out with the help of special compounds - degreasers. As a rule, it is white spirit, nefras, mixtures of similar solvents or water-alcohol compositions. Most manufacturers of paint and varnish products have proprietary degreasing compounds.

Use of volatile solvents (type 646, NT, acetone) is not worth it, as they can dissolve the underlying layer (paint, primer). This will weaken the adhesion (adhesion) and ruin the surface. Kerosene, gasoline, diesel fuel contain part of the fat, so they should not be used either.

The main task of this stage is to remove bituminous stains, persistent silicone contamination, random fingerprints, and to carry out a final preparation before painting.

We degrease qualitatively and safely

The degreasing operation itself looks like this: we apply the composition with a rag abundantly moistened in a degreaser and rub it with a dry cloth. Instead of a wet rag, you can use a spray bottle.

It is important to use a rag that does not leave a lint. There are on sale special napkins made of non-woven material, as well as thick paper towels. Rags must be constantly changed, otherwise, instead of removing greasy stains, they may be smeared.

When carrying out work, do not forget about safety: protect the respiratory organs, eyes and skin of the hands. Therefore, all operations should be carried out either outdoors or in a ventilated area, and the cost of rubber gloves, goggles and a respirator will be significantly lower than the cost of drugs.

After degreasing, do not touch the surface with hands or clothing. If you still touched - degrease this place again.

So, you already have all the knowledge that is necessary to carry out high-quality preparation of the body for painting. Neglecting these simple rules can significantly worsen the result of the work being done. Therefore, degrease correctly and safely, while enjoying what you are doing with your own hands.
