Breaking in a new car - how much to break in a new car

All cars that leave the assembly line undergo the so-called “cold run-in” - a test on special stands of the interaction between all moving parts: pistons and cylinders, crankshaft and connecting rods, gears and forks in the gearbox, differentials. However, such a run-in is intended only to identify various defects.

If you have purchased a brand new car, then you should conduct a “hot” break-in. There is nothing complicated in this, you simply need not to overload the power unit and transmission for the first 1000-2000 km of run. What is the run-in:

  • follow the readings of the tachometer, the most suitable crankshaft speed is in the range of 2-4 thousand, experts advise not to exceed 3000 rpm without special need;
  • when you shift to a higher gear, the speed drops to 2000, it is also not desirable to pick up speed at low speeds, since the load on the engine increases;
  • in lower gears, the crankshaft speed should not be allowed to increase.

In a word, stick to the optimal engine operation mode: do not press the gas pedal sharply and to failure, avoid long-term driving at the same speed with the same crankshaft speed, adjust to the driving modes and switch to lower gears in a timely manner. Prolonged idling negatively affects the power unit.

According to European standards, the following driving conditions are considered optimal:

  • clean and smooth roads;
  • no overloading of the car;
  • full warm-up of the engine during trips.

During the passage of the first thousand, do not forget to check the level of all working fluids of engine, transmission oils, brake fluid, antifreeze. Look under your car often to see if there are any leaks.

Transmission is a special article:

  • squeeze the clutch very carefully, do not press too hard;
  • shift gears smoothly and without jerks;
  • change gears on time.

Owners of cars with a manual gearbox should be especially responsible for grinding gears and a clutch disc.

Hard braking is equated to the most difficult conditions, not only do the pads wear out very quickly, but also the entire body of the car is overloaded.

A service station check will not hurt, as well as a complete diagnosis and oil change - after all, small metal particles and chips from poorly machined parts often get into the oil.

Thus, the break-in consists in observing the rules of the instructions and in the absence of overloads of all units of your car.

And never do that!
