Headliner: cleaning and repair

The roof lining of your car is the part that sits directly above your head in the car. Its material depends on the car model: it can be fabric, leather, carpet, etc. Remember to clean it periodically to avoid bacteria breeding.

🚗 What is a headliner?

Depending on the model of your vehicle, the headlining may be of different materials: carpet, fabric, leather, etc. On convertible cars, the headliner is replaced by a removable roof.

🔧 How to clean the headliner?

Le cleaning the ceiling relatively simple, but you need to be careful as the fabric can be fragile at times. Here are a few steps to clean the headliner:

• Remove the first layer of dust with a vacuum cleaner.
• Then remove any visible stains with a brush and detergent. Wipe off excess product with a cloth.
• Apply a layer of waterproofing to protect the headliner.

The headliner is pretty fragile do not spray the product directly on it and avoid using soap and water, prefer a special cleaning agent. Your headliner will be flawless.

Over time, your car's headlining can peel off in some places. Sometimes it is very inconvenient if the fabric hangs over the cab. The best solution is to replace the entire headliner for a quality result that will last over time.

Required material:

• Brush
• the cloth
• Scissors or cutter
• One meter
• the cloth
• Screwdriver

Step 1. Remove any peeling headliner.

Your ceiling is attached to the edges. To disassemble it, you will have to dismantle the edges, shade and sun visors. After these items have been removed, remove the fiber headliner support. Then remove the cloth and clean the support to keep it clean. You can use a brush to remove any remaining foam.

Step 2: glue the new fabric

We advise you to buy a new upholstery fabric, as re-bonding the old can be difficult and the result will be less aesthetically pleasing.

You can find headliner fabrics at fabric stores or automotive professionals. Think big and always do a little more than necessary to prevent the unexpected.

Now you can glue the fabric. Start by spreading the fabric on a flat support. Take a fabric glue spray and apply the glue all over the fabric. Don't make the layers too thick.

Also spray adhesive on the ceiling support. Then wait for the time recommended by the manufacturer. Times may vary from manufacturer to brand, so always read instructions carefully.

Step 3: glue the headliner fabric.

Glue the fabric to the ceiling support. Start in the center and then join the edges. You can use a rag to remove any air bubbles that are still forming on the outside. Then let it dry.

Step 4: make cutouts

The fabric tends to always go over the edge, so you will have to cut out and fasten the part that goes over the edge. Then cut the fabric through the holes.

Step 5. Put it all together

Now all you have to do is reassemble the headliner in the same way as you removed it at the beginning of the tutorial. Don't forget to collect all the elements such as the ceiling light, spacers ... The headliner is now glued on!

?? How much does it cost to change a headliner?

If you decide to change the headliner yourself, you will have to count twenty euros for the purchase of classic fabric. The price may vary depending on the quality of the selected fabric, as well as on the surface to be coated.
