200 Great Wall V2011 Ute review

The Great Wall V240 ute has found a place in many Australian garages and driveways, thanks in part to its high price tag. Now the reason to buy is getting stronger as the new V200TDi turbodiesel model is being sold alongside the V240 petrol quad.

Great Wall Motors has been in existence for two years and is becoming a serious player in the light commercial vehicle market. The Chinese manufacturer currently outsells well-known brands such as Isuzu and others, which will almost certainly accelerate with the advent of diesel.

The first batch of V200TDis has arrived and is being delivered to the 66 Great Wall dealer network. Many of them have been pre-sold. Great Wall expects a surge in sales of diesel vehicles, especially given that the light pickup market is 80% diesel.

VALUE

Diesel V200TDi models are $2000 more expensive than petrol V240s, and prices start at $24,990 for an all-wheel-drive double cab model. Check the 2WD box and it's still a competitive price of $4.

TECHNOLOGY

Power comes from a 2.0-litre DOHC (105kW/310Nm) variable geometry turbodiesel engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission. It complies with Euro 4 emission standards.

The car is not available, but is being considered. It consumes 8.3 l/100 km on the combined cycle. The payload is 1000 kg (same as the petrol V240) and the tractive effort is 2000 kg for both diesel and petrol cockpits.

The V200TDi complies with Australian government safety regulations and is equipped with dual airbags and anti-lock brakes. The other package includes leather upholstery, power windows and exterior mirrors, remote locking, alloy wheels and air conditioning.

The Great Wall V200TDi has not yet passed the ANCAP crash tests. It comes with a 3 year/100,000 km warranty and 24-hour roadside assistance. A vehicle loan program is available if your Great Wall has failed due to mechanical repairs.

DRIVING

We got to ride the rear-wheel drive V200TDi last week and it lived up to our expectations - a workhorse with a purring diesel engine that delivers good overall performance and fuel economy. The diesel has more power than the rather weak petrol four and the fuel economy is better.

While not as perfect as other pricier offerings on the market, the V200TDi is $6,500-$12,000 cheaper than the Apples. The tray is a decent size, and there's enough room for three in the back seat. It zips down the freeway with minimal fuss and has enough foothold to keep traffic flowing well behind you.

We love the new front end styling, and overall the V200TDi's looks won't offend anyone. For the DIYer on a budget (and who doesn't), the Great Wall V200TDi is a value for money. If you want a Toyota, save the extra $12 and keep smiling.
