Registration and verification of documents when buying a car

Every car enthusiast has at least once encountered choice and buying a used car, which raises many questions, for example, how to diagnose a car before buying and how to choose a legally clean car. To check the last point, you must carefully check the documents.

What documents need to be checked before buying a car?

  • vehicle passport (PTS) - the main document by which you can somehow trace the history of a particular car. This document indicates the number of car owners, their data and the period of ownership of the vehicle.
  • vehicle registration certificate - a document that contains information about the owner, his address, as well as all the characteristics of the registered car: VIN number, color, year of manufacture, engine power, weight, etc.

Additionally, if the car is 5-7 years old, you can also check the service book, it can be used to determine what problems the car had, but not always reliably, since the car could be serviced in a third-party service that is not an official dealer of the car brand and, accordingly, marks in does not leave a service book.

Document verification: duplicate TCP risks

The first thing you should pay attention to when buying a used car is whether the TCP is an original or a duplicate. What is the difference? The original Title is issued together with the car in the showroom upon purchase and there is enough space in it to change 6 owners of this car. If the person purchasing the car is the 7th owner in a row, then he will be issued a duplicate of the Title, where he will appear as the sole owner, but such a title will have a mark, as a rule, “duplicate issued from ... date, etc.” or it may be stamped “DUPLICATED”. Also, a duplicate can be issued due to loss or damage to the original TCP. These are the positive aspects under which a duplicate can be issued.

What does a duplicate PTS photo look like?

TCP original and duplicate differences

Consider the negative aspects of the case when the previous owner's title is not original. It is impossible to determine how many owners of the car had by the duplicate title and how many each owner owned the car, maybe the car was drained every half a year?

In addition, one of the most dangerous cases when buying is buying a loan car. The fact is that when applying for a loan, the bank takes the original PTS for itself until the debt is paid in full. At the same time, the owner has the opportunity to write a statement to the traffic police about the loss of the original PTS and he will be given a duplicate. If you buy such a credit car, then after some time the bank will already present you with claims for repayment of the loan. Getting out of this situation will not be easy.

Paperwork when buying a used car

Registration of documents can be done in any department of the MREO and registered with the traffic police, as a rule, everything is nearby.

Algorithm for car registration upon purchase

  1. Execution of a car sale and purchase agreement (drawn up in MREO with the participation of both parties). As a rule, the new owner is immediately offered to take out insurance and undergo a technical inspection if the old owner does not have it or has ended.
  2. After registration of the DCT (sale and purchase agreement), the keys, documents and money are transferred. According to modern car registration rules, the previous owner is no longer required for registration.
  3. Next, you need to pay for the state. registration fee (as a rule, in the traffic police departments there are specialized terminals for payment) and submit documents for registration: PTS, old registration certificate, DCT, check for payment of state duties, insurance, document on the successful passage of a car inspection (verification of the engine VIN number and body).
  4. Wait for registration, receive, check - rejoice!

and if the owner has a duplicate and sells, for example, an old car, can you somehow check the car for cleanliness, if otherwise it seems to be in order?

First you need to demand some kind of explanation, at least from the owner of the car. If he knows exactly the number of owners, he can accurately explain the reason for the establishment of a duplicate, then this is already good. I once came across a “seller”, who, looking at me with round eyes, said: “Oh, I don’t know why a duplicate, they sold me like that.” As if when he bought this car, in turn, he did not recognize such details (or really did not recognize and therefore ran into it).

So, if the owner's explanations are satisfactory, then there is an opportunity to break through the car on the traffic police website. If she is wanted, or there are encumbrances on her, then most likely you will find her there. But, however, this option will not give one hundred percent guarantees anyway, so buying a duplicate is always at your own peril and risk.
