Opel Antara 2.0 CDTI (110 kW) Enjoy

It's always good to start with optimism. In the case of the Antara, this is the general look: a car that in a way continues the Frontera tradition, has a good looks, is technically good, and is more than decent to drive. With it, you can survive on the road (and off it) in a completely normal way and to some extent even enjoy it.

Antara is technically a doppelgänger of Captive, so don't expect more than a different brand logo. And that's mostly a good thing: (besides) the Antara is a "soft" SUV that's more hampered on the ground by its sensitive looks than its powerplant and tires. The permanent four-wheel drive works well even with off-road tires, and even the electronics that control the descent rate (in the mud...) are very efficient.

One should remember only about the tenderness of her appearance. Works even better on the roads and especially in the city if you need to drive on a high sidewalk. The strength of the chassis and tires allows (of course, with common sense to control the driver's right foot), which should be avoided in cars in a safe arc.

Parking is a little less fun. Antara is good, even very well transparent, but it has an unpleasantly large turning radius. Sometimes it will take at least one more time to crash into a parking space than with a car. On the other hand, it's encouraging where traction is good enough just by force, and where two-wheel drive has problems: the Antara handles well in corners as long as the driver presses the gas pedal. The transmission is very good and the road position is good considering the height of the center of gravity and the tire.

The engine is also good: powerful and relatively economical, albeit quite loud, with a long preheat and a distinct "hole" up to 1.800 rpm. It certainly could have been more economical if the transmission had six gears that would slow down at higher speeds. This brings us to the point where optimism is powerless: the handling of the (manual) transmission is noticeably poor, which is probably the worst we've driven in years.

The movements and positions of the gear lever are extremely vague, and they "result" in shifting into first, third and fifth gears, which gives the feeling of pushing the lever into a pile of crushed goods. There is also a steering wheel on this side, it is vague and inaccurate, but at the same time quite loud in extreme positions. Skoda; Antara on paper and to a large extent in practice promises much more, and the steering wheel and gearbox spoil the picture too much.

Too much? How do you take; of course, it is enough for the driver to ask the price the next moment. And it weighs. Um, that doesn't look particularly good. ...

  • If the drivetrain and steering wheel were even average, the Antara would be a very versatile, useful and fun car for every day, for families, for singles ... Then we would be looking for small flaws. So…
