Opel Antara 2.0 CDTI AT Cosmo Comfort

If you are interested in the Chevrolet Captiva, which is built on the same Korean production lines as the Opel Antara, browse the list and find the third edition of this year. In this first February issue of Avto magazine, we thoroughly tested technically (and partly also in terms of design, although they claim that outside of the Antara and Captiva they only have a windshield) a very similar city or sports SUV that will (very likely) collapse ... clients. But as long as the money stays in the same house, it doesn't hurt. Even the bosses, who usually have a supply in their pockets. ...

Two such different brands, but such a similar car? The question is whether such cost reduction is rational, since we know that in Europe Chevrolet (at least for now) is known as a cheap car brand (unlike in North America, where the Chevrolet Corvette is still one of the most famous and popular cars). coveted American icons), and Opel is said to be known for reliable, not-so-flashy cars. But today, Chevrolet is much more than just a bargain purchase of “so many and so many pounds (of equipment) at such and such a low price,” and even Opel has become much bolder in design lately. So we're probably of the same mindset that we as buyers don't care which cars are related (read: ditto) as long as they're all good. We are glad.

The Opel Antara entered the Slovenian market much later than the Captiva, which may not have been the best decision. However, despite the similarity, it brings a little freshness to the exterior, and especially to the interior. Antara attracts the eyes of passers-by with its beautiful shape, it is tall enough and has four-wheel drive, so it is not afraid of puddles, but, above all, it is well-equipped and the best materials are used in the interior. The Opel SUV follows the currently very popular fashion principles that define a little “macho” but gentle protection (especially the chassis and the lower parts of the bumpers), so it feels good both on dusty crushed stone truck tracks and between polished ones. bodies before the opera.

However, nowhere does it feel completely at home, as it is too soft for real terrain and too big for city driving and therefore uncomfortable. But what to do if it is modern or "inside", as our young people like to call it, you can also accept it a little. But to keep drivers from suffering too much, the test Antara had parking assist sensors that (when worked properly, which we missed in the test car) inexplicably quickly turn into professional drivers who can park even to the nearest centimeter. Despite the road tires, it also had four-wheel drive.

Basically, Antara drives only on the front wheels (less fuel consumption!). If the nose loses contact, the sipes (soaked in oil) are activated electronically through an electromagnetic clutch that transmits up to 50 percent of the torque back. Therefore, Antara is not afraid of the hard-to-reach trails to your homes in the hills, but still do not go to the mud training ground on Pochek and do not be too daring while driving through the mountains of snow. The weak point of this machine in the field (aside from the road tires!) Is the lack of a gearbox and differential lock, as well as the soft plastic that cracks as soon as you drive on a large pile.

In short: off-road antics are actually a pity, although the test model was also equipped with a Descent Speed Control (DCS), which (without braking the driver) automatically adjusts the speed to seven km / h. we might bump into tires. So why all-wheel drive? So you can even drive uphill on a snowy road and, unlike most drivers, you don't have to wait for them to clear your way first.

But there is some caution here too! Antara due to the heavy engine and drive, which pulls the front more than pushes the rear, while exaggerating the force with the nose out of the corner. With a well-supported steering gear, you should be able to tame it in time (and no sweat on your forehead) and turn towards your target, but you will most likely end up in a ditch with your nose and not your butt. ...

Comfort, however, is what most pampers the Antara turbodiesel and automatic transmission. The chassis is tuned for comfort, only getting a little twitchy on short, consistent bumps; body tilt will only get on your nerves if you put yourself in the role of Michael Schumacher on black corners, otherwise the passengers in the back seat will not be bad; the transmission is soft and smooth, unless you demand speed and precision from it, like in Formula 1.

Although the automatic transmission (which also allows for manual gear shifting) is only five-speed, it is very gentle on smooth driving with well-calculated gear ratios because otherwise you would not drive a loud engine too high at 140 km / h, as most of us drive on the highway. The problem arises when you want a little more dynamism.

When overtaking slower ones, the engine (unlike other Opels, this 110-kilowatt Chevrolet turbodiesel engine is either made in collaboration with the VM factory, not Fiat!) and transmission puts a lot of effort into overcoming air resistance and two tons of mass. The gearbox gets confused too quickly during fast shifts (when the driver presses on the gas and then changes his mind the next moment - for example, when he wants to overtake and at the last moment gets back in line) ). Here's why it applies: an automatic transmission only works great when you don't expect too much from it. Smooth acceleration, gentle (timely) braking and smooth cornering cruise is a winning combination!

In the photographs you can see that the seats, doors and gear lever were heavily covered in leather, that an aviation-style handbrake lever was used between the front seats, and the center console is well folded and therefore allows for easy radio handling. air conditioning, cruise control and on-board computers (including from behind the wheel and steering!).

Although the fact remains in the subconscious of the owner of Antara that even Captiva drivers drive a similar car, for which they deducted several thousand less, it is the interior that proves that there are differences. In favor of Antar.

Overall rating (313/420)

  • If we were to say that the Antara with this kind of equipment is suitable for Sunday drivers, we would probably be right. But not in a bad way, but only because this city SUV has calm, nicely (on Sundays) dressed drivers who know how to enjoy the comfort.

  • Exterior (13/15)

For some, it is also similar to the Captiva, for others, just a good Opel. On the road, however, there is definitely a fresh and harmonious steel horse.

  • Interior (105/140)

More stately materials than Captiva, also richly furnished. Large (and expandable!) Trunk.

  • Engine, transmission (28

    / 40)

Serenity is the word best suited to the driver of the most powerful turbodiesel combined with an automatic transmission.

  • Driving performance (66

    / 95)

If you are fast, you better go for the OPC versions. Otherwise, Antara belongs to the golden mean among rivals.

  • Performance (23/35)

Even what the engine could theoretically do, only a five-speed automatic transmission suppresses in the mud.

  • Security (39/45)

Six airbags, switchable ESP, xenon headlights ...

  • Economy

They say comfort is worth it. While we think the engine in the smaller car is less power hungry, its heavy weight and automatic transmission put a lot of work into it.
