Opel Astra - the most common malfunctions

Opel Astra is one of the most famous models of this German manufacturer, which is very popular in Poland. There is nothing strange in this - after all, for a reasonable price, we get a nice compact car with decent performance and good equipment. However, there are no perfect cars, and the Astra is no exception. Each generation, although of course gradually improving, struggled with more or less ailments. What aspects should be paid attention to in each of the 5 editions of this German treaty?

What will you learn from this post?

  • What problems most often affected Opel Astra generations I - V?

Shortly speaking

In terms of popularity, the Opel Astra in our country is sometimes compared to the Volkswagen Golf. Each subsequent generation became a hit. Although they are generally considered reliable, all series have had minor or major faults and breakdowns. Check out what issues the various versions of Astra have been struggling with.

Opel Astra I (F)

The first generation Opel Astra debuted at the 1991 Frankfurt Motor Show and immediately won a group of fans. It was one of the brand's largest projects, as more than 8 people took part in its creation. technicians, engineers and designers. Opel expected the model to be very successful and enter production at full capacity - it has been in the making for years. as many as 11 versions of gasoline engines (starting with version 1.4 60-92 hp, ending with the most powerful 2.0 GSI engine with 150 hp) and 3 diesel.

The failure rate of the first generation Opel Astra is mainly related to the age of the vehicle. If in the early 90s drivers used a rather problem-free ride, now it is difficult not to notice a number of ailments from which the already worn-out Astra "one" suffers:

  • problems with the timing belt - pay close attention to the frequency of its replacement;
  • frequent failures of the generator, thermostat, exhaust gas recirculation valve and ignition device, as well as the V-belt and all components;
  • damage to the cylinder head gasket;
  • corrosion problems (fenders, wheel arches, sills, trunk lid, as well as chassis and electrical components);
  • there are also engine oil leaks and problems with the steering system (backlash is clearly felt).

Opel Astra II (G)

At one time, it was a real hit on Polish roads, which could only be compared with the third generation. Astra II premiered in 1998. – During the period of production, 8 fuel trucks and 5 diesel engines were shipped. It turned out the most durable drive. 8L 1.6-valve petrol engine with 75 to 84 hp.... Over time, they increasingly refused to buy models with 16-valve engines, since they were distinguished by high engine oil consumption. Recommended diesels in turn Engines 2.0 and 2.2.

The Opel Astra of the second generation, unfortunately, is not a model of trouble-free operation. The most common malfunctions include:

  • problems with ignition coils, distributors and with the ignition system on gasoline versions;
  • Exhaust gas recirculation valve failures are very common in gasoline and diesel fuel;
  • glitches on dashboard displays, electronics going crazy;
  • corrosion, especially on sills, fender edges and around the fuel tank cap;
  • breakage of the combined light switch;
  • The stabilizer links and the front shock absorber mounts need to be replaced from time to time;
  • emergency generators;
  • high failure rate of the exhaust system.

Opel Astra III (H)

It is still a fairly popular choice for drivers looking for a reliable, low maintenance family car. The Astra III debuted in 2003 in Frankfurt.like its predecessors. Until the end of production in 2014, it was released to the market. 9 versions of gasoline engines and 3 diesel engines... What about bounce rate? Fortunately, the 3rd generation has fixed most of the problems of the previous versions of the Astra, but you should still be aware of the following aspects:

  • in the most powerful gas tanks, it is necessary to take into account the possible need to replace the turbocharger;
  • diesel engines have problems with a clogged particulate filter, a jammed turbocharger, a failure of the EGR valve, and a breakdown of the dual-mass flywheel;
  • engine electronics failures are common, incl. control module;
  • in version 1.7 CDTI the oil pump sometimes fails;
  • in the Easytronic automatic transmission, problems with the control electronics may occur;
  • very often there are problems with damage to the air conditioner radiator and jamming of the air conditioner compressor;
  • high-mileage models struggle with steering failures and metal-rubber suspension breakouts.

Opel Astra IV (J)

The premiere of the fourth generation Opel Astra took place in 2009, that is, quite recently. Previous versions of this German compact have already established themselves and won the trust of a crowd of drivers. No wonder that The penultimate edition of the Astra is one of the most sought-after vehicles in the used car sector.... There are as many as 20 variants of the Quartet engine on the market, which are generally considered reliable. However, there are problems with individual components:

  • turbocharger failures in more powerful versions of the drive;
  • non-permanent dual-mass wheel;
  • problems with the air conditioning compressor, central locking and clutch position sensor;
  • quite common brake disc bendingwhat is manifested by vibrations during braking;
  • in models with a gas installation there are problems with the factory installation of Landi Renzo;
  • on models with a gasoline engine, transmission failure may occur.

Opel Astra V (C)

The Astra V is the latest generation of the German bestseller, debuting in 2015. It is a modern, safe and reliable car, offered with 9 engine versions: 6 petrol and 3 diesel engines. They provide a pleasant driving experience, are dynamic and durable. The "five" Astra has other minor problems:

  • hanging screen of the multimedia system;
  • problems with support systems based on the operation of the front camera;
  • fairly rapid suspension wear;
  • unexpected error messages (especially diesel and petrol engines 1.4 Turbo);
  • stretching timing chains on diesel engines.

    Even though the parking brake is released. A warning appears along with a buzzer, about an integrated parking brake. What could be the reason? Thanks

    At what speed should I put it in 6th gear? The performance I achieved was 13 km/liter using gas and oil. Can anyone instruct me how I should change gears to keep the car with good performance.
    Grato
