Opel Astra: flash

The new version of the Astra looks in great shape

In fact, for us, and for you, our readers, the new Astra can now be called almost a good old friend. We presented in detail all the key innovations in the model, talked about the ability to drive a disguised prototype during the final settings of the car and, of course, shared our impressions of the serial product after the first official tests. Yes, you've already read about all this, as well as the OnStar system, and the LED matrix lights that turn night into day. Well, it's time for the next step, which is of great importance for evaluating the qualities of the model - the first comprehensive auto motor und sport test.

Opel has definitely put in a lot of effort to push all the strengths of the latest and most ambitious addition to its lineup. And this is no coincidence, because GM management has allocated serious funds to Opel to develop a completely new model - with a lightweight design, completely new engines, new seats, etc. The end result is already ahead. With its gently sloping roofline, characteristic curves and edges, the new Astra exudes elegance, dynamism and confidence, while its styling looks like a natural continuation of the line set by the previous generation. The interior has also been redesigned, with the upper part of the instrument panel taking on gently curved shapes, and below the touch screen there is a row of buttons – to control the air conditioning, heated steering wheel and seats, seat ventilation, etc. in front of the gear lever. there are buttons that control the lane assistant, as well as to turn the start-stop system on and off. The latter is set up very interestingly - if for most competitors the engine starts automatically when the clutch is pressed, then here it happens only after the driver releases the brake pedal. Sounds great in theory, but in practice often results in a "false start" when the green light comes on.

Agility and temperament

Three-cylinder 105 hp liter turbo engine. accelerates the car unexpectedly strongly, which is largely due to the fact that, despite the extravagant equipment, the test car reported a weight of only 1239 kilograms - a huge improvement over its predecessor. With its deep roar, the engine starts to pull confidently from 1500 rpm and maintains a good mood up to 5500 rpm - just above this limit, its temperament is somewhat weakened due to the large transmission ratios. 11,5 seconds from standstill to 100 km/h and a top speed of 200 km/h are more than decent figures for a "base" compact class model with a power rating of just over 100 horsepower. Unpleasant vibrations are practically absent, good manners are hindered only by an increased noise level when accelerating from operating modes below 1500 rpm. There are also minor concerns about the soundproofing of the cabin, as especially at higher speeds, aerodynamic noise becomes a noticeable part of the atmosphere in the cabin.

Next turn, please!

Otherwise, comfort is clearly one of the model's strengths - aside from a slight tendency to hit the chassis, the suspension does a great job. Some fans of the “French” style of driving, especially at low speeds, will probably want a slightly softer setting from Opel, but in our opinion they will be wrong in this case - whether it is sharp or wavy, small or large, the Astra overcomes bumps smoothly , tight and without residual impacts. That's the way it should be. The optional electrically adjustable ergonomic seats, which, thanks to their pleasantly low position, ensure optimal integration of the driver into the cab, are also worthy of praise. This is a reliable prerequisite for pleasant driving moments, which, in fact, is not present in the new Astra. The weight savings are felt with every metre, and the direct and precise steering makes driving the Astra around corners a real pleasure. The tendency to understeer only shows up when approaching the limits of the laws of physics, since the ESP system is delayed and works remarkably harmoniously. Astra frankly loves corners and is a pleasure to drive - the engineers from Rüsselsheim deserve compliments for the car's handling.

Testing our special route, marked with red and white cones, which brings out even the smallest details in the behavior of the car, once again underlines the good work of the Opel employees: Astra overcomes all tests at a convincing pace, demonstrates precise handling and always remains easy to master; when the ESP system is off, the rear end is slightly serviced, but this not only does not turn into a dangerous cornering tendency, but even makes it easier for the driver to stabilize the car. In critical situations, Astra remains completely trouble-free - it is enough to adequately respond to the accelerator and steering wheel. The brakes also work well, showing not the slightest tendency to decrease in efficiency at high loads. So far, Astra does not allow itself any significant weaknesses, and its strengths are obvious. However, the task of a compact class car is not an easy one, as it has to cope equally well with everyday tasks and family vacations.

Family problems

For a family vacation, it is important that the cars sitting in the back seat feel good, because otherwise the trip will sooner or later turn into a little nightmare. The Astra excels in this respect, with the rear seats very well contoured and providing impeccable comfort over long distances. The space for the legs and head of passengers also does not give cause for dissatisfaction - there is clearly noticeable progress compared to the previous edition of the model. Despite the sporty coupe-like shape of the roof, getting in and out from behind is no problem either. The trunk holds from 370 to 1210 liters, which is typical for class values. An unpleasant detail is a high loading threshold, which makes it difficult to work with large loads. It's a little disappointing that, unlike the previous model, it's impossible to achieve a flat cargo area floor.

The promised quantum leap in terms of materials in the interior is a fact - inside the Astra comes across as a really solid build. Undoubted are the advantages of matrix LED lights, which, without exaggeration, are able to turn the dark part of the day into daylight. The blind spot monitoring assistant also works very well, which works at speeds up to 150 km / h.

In conclusion, we can conclude that Opel has reason to place high hopes on the new Astra. The 1.0 DI Turbo version differs only in the hair with a maximum rating of five full stars in automotive motorcycles and sports - and because of very small details that can not outshine the respectable performance in all key parameters.
