Opel Mokka - a guide to the small crossover market, part 4

Opel's adventures in the off-road and off-road class began in 1991 when the Frontera entered production. The car, built in collaboration with Isuzu, turned out to be very successful for the German brand. Quite different was the case with his successor - the Antara model. The compact SUV, produced since 2006, was very coldly received by the clientele, mainly due to the high price. Opel, however, did not despair, decided to take advantage of the growing popularity of small crossovers and began working on its own representative of this lucrative market segment.

Last year, he saw the light at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Opel Mokka - the answer to models such as the Nissan Juke or Mini Countryman. The car arrived at dealerships only at the end of 2012, but even before the official start of sales, it was known that it would not repeat Antara's failures - the company from Rüsselsheim accepted many initial orders. We add that Mokka is built on the Gamma II technical platform, like the twin models Buick Encore and Chevrolet Trax.

And if we have already mentioned the latter, it is worth noting that if the Trax, sold externally, quite effectively hides its connections with Mokka, then the Encore, known on the American market, is distinguished mainly by the manufacturer’s emblems. This means that in both Opel and Buick we are dealing with a car that hides its small dimensions (4278 mm long, 1777 mm wide and mm high) with a muscular silhouette full of strongly emphasized curves, while saving on glass. surfaces.

Engines - what can we find under the hood?

The basis of the motor versions is a 1.6-liter gasoline naturally aspirated engine with a capacity of 115 hp. (at 6000 rpm) and 155 Nm (at 4000 rpm). Combined with a 5-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive, it accelerates from 100 to 12,3 km/h in 170 seconds from the start, and has a top speed of around 6,5 km/h. Fortunately, average performance goes hand in hand with moderate fuel consumption, reaching XNUMX liters.

The second petrol unit, 1.4 Turbo, is a much more nimble design. It develops 140 hp. in the range of 4900-6000 rpm and 200 Nm in the range of 1850-4900 rpm. The buyer is offered a choice of several drive options - 6-speed "mechanics" and front-wheel drive, 6-speed "automatic" and front-wheel drive or 6-speed "mechanics" and 4 × 4 drive. Depending on the configuration 1,4 liters Opel Mokka reaches 100 km / h in 9,8-10,7 seconds, accelerates to 186-193 km / h, and for every 100 kilometers it needs 5,9-6,7 liters of fuel.

Instead of a petrol version, those who want to buy a German pseudo-SUV may be tempted by a 1,7-liter diesel option. Like the 1.4 Turbo, it is offered in three drive configurations that differ in performance, fuel consumption and weight. The parameters of the CDTI unit remain unchanged - the diesel reaches 130 horses at 4000 rpm and 300 Newton meters in the range of 2000-2500 rpm.

Mocha with a diesel under the hood, unfortunately, is heavily overloaded. Despite this, the car effectively accelerates to “hundreds” (in 9,4–10,5 seconds), develops a speed of 184–190 km/h on German routes, and its fuel consumption, according to the manufacturer, is only 4,5– 5,3 l. / 100 km. Like the Chevrolet Trax, the 1,7-liter diesel has two annoying drawbacks - it is very loud and it has a pronounced turbo lag.

Equipment - what will we get in the series and what will we have to pay extra for?

He has the standard equipment option in stock. Opel Mokka, is called Essentia and is only available in combination with the base powerplant. What does he offer? The series includes front, side and curtain airbags, ESP system, hill start and descent assistance systems, front electric windows, electric and heated exterior mirrors, cruise control, on-board computer, radio with CD / MP3 player, AUX port and steering wheel controls, steering wheel repair kit, daytime running lights, 16” steel wheels, alarm and start/stop system (except for “automatic” cars, where the system is not available and 1.4 Turbo FWD models, where the system must be paid additionally PLN 1000).

Other optional pieces of equipment include metallic/pearl paint (available for PLN 2200), tire pressure check system (PLN 800), digital tuner (also PLN 800) and a temporary spare tire (PLN 300).

The Enjoy variant, because it's called so, comes with air conditioning as standard, as well as power rear windows, a USB port, Bluetooth, a leather steering wheel, front fog lights and 18-inch alloy wheels. The Start/Stop system is standard on most versions - most of them because it's not available in the automatics, and on the 1.4 Turbo FWD model you have to pay an extra 1000 zł for it.

Opel Mokka Enjoy boasts a huge list of options. Package" or "Electropackage" (the first offers two-zone "air conditioning" with electronic control, an armrest for the driver and a drawer under the passenger seat, the other offers electric folding mirrors, front and rear parking sensors and 230 V power supply). connector).

The list of packages offered on Enjoy does not end there. To your Opel Mokka You can also order a “Park and Ride” kit from us, which includes dual-zone electronically controlled air conditioning, electric mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, a rear view camera, an armrest for the driver, a 230 V socket and one of two multimedia sets. If we choose the first, we will pay 4600 6150 zlotys, and if the second (including navigation), we will have to pay the dealer zlotys.

The third and final specification is the Cosmo version, which will be available for all Lightning crossover drive options. In addition to the Enjoy standard, the Cosmo variant offers power folding side mirrors, auto-dimming interior mirrors, rain, dusk and parking sensors (front and rear), tinted rear windows and an electronically controlled air conditioning system instead of a manual one.

In addition to the above elements, all individual add-ons offered in Cosmo are the same as in Enjoy. But the add-on packages are different. The set with leather upholstery costs not PLN 6500, but PLN 6100, the "Park and Ride" package is less rich, so it costs PLN 2100 or 3900, but the "Good visibility", "Comfort package" and "Electric package" packages. “not offered at all. Only the Cosmo has a "Driver Assistance Package" available, which includes the Opel Eye camera and bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights.

For an additional fee, the buyer may wish to extend the mechanical warranty to a maximum of 5 years. Summary - which version should I use?

General Motors knew what it was doing when it evaluated the Mokka and the Chevrolet Trax lookalike. Since the American brand enjoys (at least on our continent) less prestige than Opel, and since the Trax itself has a slightly worse finish than the model due to our western border, Chevy costs several thousand zlotys less. To keep the Mokka from losing ground, it was introduced to a much wider range of powertrains and a much longer list of optional equipment.

So is it worth paying extra for Mokka? The answer to this question is not unambiguous, because, as they say, the point of view depends on the point of sitting. If you approach buying a car with a lot of common sense and don't need exclusive extras, and the Trax powertrain line-up allows you to choose the version that suits you, then Chevy is the best choice - not only is it cheaper, but it also has better standard equipment, less expensive options and longer warranty. If, on the other hand, certain drive versions or optional equipment items are missing from the offer of the American model, we must turn to the German car.

Engine version selection for Opel Mokka looks like a Chevrolet. This means that the base 1,6-litre petrol engine will appeal to people who want moderate running costs (both fuel and maintenance) instead of very good performance, the 1.4 Turbo engine will appeal to fast riders, and the 1.7 CDTI diesel will delight drivers. who often go off-road. When it comes to choosing an equipment option, we recommend choosing the Enjoy option - it already offers a lot in this series and, if necessary, allows you to take advantage of the long list of accessories and available accessory packages.
