Ineos Grenadier will soon be climbing the mountain next to you.

Ineos Automotive has detailed plans to launch the tough Grenadier in Australia, with the off-road focused SUV set to land in Australia in the fourth quarter of 4.

And when it does, it will have a starting price of around $84,500, which is not only cheaper than a new LandCruiser 300 Series (which starts at $89,900 for the GX), but also cheaper than a used LandCruiser 200 Series. who routinely make six-figure sums in the secondary market.

Uniquely, if you choose a petrol or diesel engine, there will be no price penalty, and both engine options will be priced the same.

However, it's more expensive than the new Land Rover Defender, which starts at around $71. The model is said to have inspired the Grenadier when the Ineos founder lamented switching from an old Defender to a new one at The Grenadier in London before deciding to create his own, more old-school rival.

The range will then increase, but the brand says the lineup will not "disappear into sky-high price points" as it aims to sell around 1000 Down Under units in the first 12 months.

Ineos is set to open online booking on September 30th for already referred customers, and will open to the general public on October 14th. Sales will officially open in July 2022, months before the vehicles arrive.

So what do you get for your investment? You can ruthlessly describe the Grenadier as a sort of Frankenstein monster of off-road SUVs, given that Ineos sourced components from existing companies (engines from BMW, shocks and gearboxes from ZF, etc.) and outsourced much of the heavy engineering work to Magna. Steyr. But the reality is much better than that.

This is not a backyard project. Ineos says she sought out leaders in her fields around the world and then assembled this best-in-class equipment to build what she says will be one of the toughest cars on the planet.

The brand will back its car in Australia with a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty and a five-year prepaid service plan, as well as what Ineos describes as its "aftermarket plan" which will be backed by Bosch service in Australia. .

"It was built from the bottom up to this plan," says Justin Hosevard, director of sales and marketing for Ineos APAC.

“Before we envisioned how we would sell cars, we wanted to know how we could provide them with parts, information and everything people need to keep their cars on the road.”

The brand will be launched with 16 sales and service partners across Australia in the fourth quarter of next year, covering all capital cities as well as regional centers such as Cairns, Geelong, Newcastle, Gippsland and Launceston. They will be supported by Bosch's existing service facility in Australia, with the brand promising that "by the third year, 4% of the Australian population will be within reasonable proximity of sales and service outlets."

Buyers can also simply order online or in person from fairly basic showrooms that focus on the vehicle rather than the furniture.

We already know that this ladder-frame SUV, which is produced in Wales, will be powered by a BMW 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine (around 212kW and 450Nm) and a diesel engine (around 185kW and 550Nm) mated to an eight-cylinder engine. ZF high-speed automatic transmissions, as well as landings with permanent all-wheel drive and three locking differentials. The car was also designed to be as "analogue" as possible, with an easy-to-clean interior, rubber flooring, drain plugs, a reduced number of ECUs, and a physical key. However, you'll find a 4-inch center touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Full pricing and specifications will be revealed closer to the car's launch.
