Main battle tank AMX-40

Main battle tank AMX-40The AMX-40 tank was developed by the French tank industry specifically for export. Despite the use of many components and assemblies of the AMX-40 in the design of the AMX-32, in general it is a new combat vehicle. The first prototype of the machine was ready in 1983 and shown at the weapons exhibition in Satori. The AMX-40 tank is equipped with the SOTAS fire control system. The gunner has an ARCH M581 sight with a 10x magnification and an M550 laser rangefinder from the C11A5 company connected to it, which has a range of up to 10 km. A 7,62 mm anti-aircraft machine gun is mounted on the commander's cupola. The ammunition load of the 20 mm cannon and 7,62 mm machine gun consists of 578 shots and 2170 rounds, respectively. Three smoke grenade launchers are placed on the sides of the tower. According to the manufacturer, instead of them, it is possible to install the Galix system, which is used on the Leclerc tank.

Above the commander's cupola is the M527 gyro-stabilized panoramic sight, which has a 2- and 8-fold magnification and is used for all-round observation, target designation, gun guidance and firing. In addition, the tank commander has an M496 sight with 8x magnification. For firing and surveillance at night, the Kastor TVT thermal imaging system is designed, the camera of which is fixed to the right on the gun mask.

The installed guidance system and fire control system make it possible to hit a stationary target located at a distance of 90 m from the first shot with a 2000% probability of hitting. The data processing time from target detection to shot is less than 8 seconds. In tests, the AMX-40 showed good mobility, which was provided by a 12-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine "Poyo" V12X, interlocked with a West German 7P automatic transmission and developing 1300 hp. With. at 2500 rpm A little later, the German transmission was replaced by the French type E5M 500. When driving on the highway, the tank showed a speed of 70 km / h, and when driving off-road - 30-45 km / h.

The undercarriage consists of six double rubber track rollers, a rear drive wheel, a front idler, four idler rollers and a track. Track rollers have individual torsion-type suspension.

In 1986, the AMX-40 underwent field tests in Abu Dhabi and Qatar, and in June 1987, two prototypes were sent to Saudi Arabia for comparative tests with the M1A1 Abrams, Challenger and Osorio. From a constructive point of view, the AMX-40 main battle tank is similar to the AMX-32 - it is made according to the same classical scheme with a front-mounted control compartment, a middle-mounted fighting compartment and a rear-power compartment. The driver's seat is located on the left in front of the hull. Above it in the roof of the hull there is a round hatch with three periscopes, one of which is integral with the hatch cover. To the right of the driver's seat is an ammunition rack with a part ammunition and fuel tanks. In the floor behind the driver's seat there is an emergency escape hatch.

The loader has its own hatch with three periscopes. On the left side of the turret there is a hatch that serves to load ammunition and remove spent cartridges. The hull contains fuel tanks that provide a highway range of up to 600 km, and when using two hinged 200-liter barrels that are attached to the stern, the cruising range increases to 850 km. A disassembled dozer blade is attached to the front armor plate. Its assembly and installation on the tank is carried out by one of the crew members.

Combined armor is used in the frontal projections of the AMX-40 hull and turret, providing protection against armor-piercing shells up to 100 mm caliber with a semi-automatic lock, capable of firing French-made armor-piercing and high-explosive shells, as well as standard 120 mm NATO ammunition. Gun ammunition - 40 shots. The auxiliary armament of the tank consists of a 20-mm M693 cannon, coaxial with a gun and capable of firing at air targets.
