Before you understand the brand and understand what its characteristics are, you need to know what gear oils are.

Gear Lubricants

Gear oil is a petroleum product used to reduce friction between mating parts of an automatic transmission/manual transmission.

Its main purpose is to protect parts from wear. Thanks to lubrication, the life of the transmission is extended and the correct functioning of all components is ensured.

Gear oils such as Castrol Syntrax QL are usually made from a base fluid and additives that allow the base to perform better.

Depending on the scope of use, oils are divided into types that reflect the technical characteristics and the possibility of use in any units. According to the classification according to performance indicators, the following categories of motor oils are distinguished:

  • GL This includes engine oils for transmissions that are not subjected to high loads. They contain anti-wear and anti-corrosion additives. They are used in gearboxes of trucks, special agricultural machinery;
  • GL-2. Greases operating in medium-heavy conditions. Additives resist wear. It is usually poured into tractor gearboxes. Designed for worm gears;
  • GL-3. Suitable for moderate conditions. It is used for lubrication of gearboxes of trucks. Cannot be used on hypoid gearboxes;
  • GL-4. This category of oils is poured into gearboxes operating under light conditions, as well as heavily loaded ones. It is poured into bevel hypoid gearboxes with a small axial displacement. Ideal for trucks. Contains half of GL-5 additives;
  • Heavy Duty Gear Oil GL 5. Used in hypoid gearboxes with high axle offset. It is possible to fill oil into a synchronized unit if it is allowed by the manufacturer;
  • GL-6. The oil is optimal for high speed hypoid gearboxes operating under very severe conditions. Contains a lot of phosphorus additives that prevent wear.

An important indicator is the viscosity of the lubricant. It determines the temperature limits at which automotive oil performs its tasks correctly. According to the SAE specification, the following gear lubricants exist:

  • for summer. Marked with a number. Considered most effective in sweltering conditions;
  • for the winter. They are designated by the letter "w" and a number indicating which oil has a minimum temperature limit;
  • for any season. More common today. Denoted by two numbers and a letter.

Summer/winter motor oils are not very practical and cheap. It often turns out that the oil has not yet exhausted its resource and already needs to be replaced. In view of this, universal lubricants from well-known companies, such as Castrol, have become very popular.

Lubrication indicators for transmissions 75w140

Having dealt with the theoretical part, you can proceed to familiarize yourself with the indicators of the universal lubricant 75w140. It is used in gearboxes operating under high pressure and shock loads, i.e. where good viscosity and high load capacity are required.

This automotive oil is made from base fluids and additives. Forms a strong lubricating film on mating parts in high/low temperature conditions.

Features of oil 75w140

The main benefit of this oil is that:

  • rust resistant;
  • well protects against wear in any operating conditions;
  • resistant to movement;
  • liquid;
  • prevents the formation of foam;
  • extends the life of some parts of the gearbox;
  • has excellent bearing capacity;
  • reduces transmission maintenance costs;
  • allows you to easily and smoothly start the engine;
  • perfectly lubricates parts, forms a reliable film;
  • protects gearbox parts from contamination.

Comparison with 75w90

The decoding of synthetic oil 75w140 is as follows:

  • 75 - the minimum temperature limit of minus thirty-five degrees;
  • 140 is the maximum temperature limit plus forty-five degrees.

The difference between 75w90 and 75w140 synthetics is high temperature viscosity. The first can be used if the temperature does not exceed plus thirty-five degrees, so it has a narrower range of application than 75w140.

When choosing a lubricant, consider what your automaker writes in the description of the car. The manufacturer conducts many tests to find the optimal lubricant, so he can definitely be trusted.
