Stop road death

To cut the number of fatal accidents by half is the goal set by the Regional Road Safety Council by 2010. Ways to achieve it are determined by the "Regional road safety program", developed by order of the council. This program was developed by a team of specialists led by a Ph.D. Kazimierz Jamroz from the Gdansk University of Technology.

Every year about 300 people die in accidents on the Pomeranian roads. Improving these statistics will not be easy, especially since there are more and more cars.

The Pomeranian Voivodeship is friendly because it is safe – this is the mission of the strategic program to reduce the number and reduce the consequences of the tragic consequences of traffic accidents by 2010. If we were to pursue this goal within our current capacity, by 2010 up to 2 people would die in traffic accidents and more than 70 21 people would be injured. The cost of eliminating the consequences of these tragic traffic accidents will amount to more than PLN XNUMX billion.

Actions under the program should lead to a reduction in the death toll by at least 320 people, which is equal to the number of road deaths in Pomerania in one year. The number of wounded should be less than 18,5 thousand. Reducing the cost of repairing damage after accidents should amount to PLN 5,4 billion. The implementation of the Gambit program will require PLN 5,2 billion.

The decrease in the number of fatal accidents in Pomerania will occur after the implementation of 5 priority tasks indicated in the Gambit program:

1. Improvement of the road safety system in the voivodship; 2. Modification of aggressive and dangerous behavior of road users; 3. Protection of pedestrians and cyclists; 4. Improved the most dangerous places; 5. Reducing the severity of accidents.

The first priority must be achieved, in particular, on education. The second concerns both pedestrians and drivers. The aggressive behavior of both should be reduced by increasing the activity of the police on the roads, as well as automatic registration of offenses. It is also planned to improve the level of driver training. So-called physical road measures, in particular traffic calming methods, are used to force road users to behave appropriately, he predicts. Parent education is also a priority.

Under the third priority, the protection of pedestrians and cyclists should consist in particular of the separation of pedestrians, cyclists and cars. The fourth priority includes the elimination of obvious deficiencies in the road network, including at the design stage. It is also planned to build bypass roads and improve the visibility of the road.

The fifth priority is the severity of accidents. First of all, this will be achieved by creating a safe road environment, reducing the time for emergency services to arrive at the scene of an accident, and improving the skills of road users in the field of first aid.

Emergency roads

Most accidents occur in the counties of Gdansk and Gdynia, as well as on national roads No. 6 (from Tricity to Szczecin), No. 22 (the so-called Berlinka), No. 1 (in the section Gdansk - Torun), along provincial roads No. 210 (Słupsk - Ustka), No. 214 (Lębork - Leba), No. 226 (Pruszcz Gdanski - Koscierzyna). The largest number of victims of accidents was recorded in the communes: Chojnice, Wejherowo, Pruszcz Gdański and Kartuzy.
