"Stay alive" or how dangerous is it in a car in the heat?

How hot is the interior of a car in the sun? How dangerous is it to leave children and pets in a closed car in summer? Once, researchers from a German automobile club asked a similar question. They set a goal - to find out what happens in the car after 1,5 hours of being in the sun.

What was the purpose of this experiment? Three identical cars were placed side by side in the sun, while the temperature in the shade was already +28 °C. Next, they began to measure the increase. In the first car, all windows and doors were closed completely, in the second, one window was left open, and in the third, 2.

In total, in the first case, in an hour and a half, the air heated up to 60 degrees! With one open window, the temperature in the cabin reached 90 ° C in 53 minutes, and in the third variant - 47 ° C.

*Two ajar windows periodically create a draft, and the temperature readings jump at the same time. Of course, for an adult, 47 ° C is not fatal, but still harmful. It all depends on the state of health and specific circumstances.

From all this, only one conclusion can be drawn - you should not leave children or pets locked up in a car in hot weather. Also, when the sun is strong, it becomes more difficult to drive a car: the driver gets tired faster and concentrates his attention worse (which is too dangerous on the road).

  • Start long trips early in the morning or late in the evening.

  • If the car has been in the heat for a long time, then you need to arrange a draft: open all the doors and the hatch, if any.

  • You don't need to turn up the air conditioner. It is better to direct air currents to the area of the passengers' shoulders or to the glass (to avoid colds).

  • The optimum temperature for a comfortable stay in the cabin is 22-25 ° C.

  • To quickly cool the car, you need to put the air conditioner on for a while in the air recirculation mode.

  • In hot weather, drink more fluids.

  • It is better to wear lighter and looser clothes.

  • If the seats in the car are leather, then it is better not to sit on them in short skirts and shorts in the heat. The same applies to the leather steering wheel: do not grab it after a long parking in the sun.
