Report Shows Hummer's New EV Weight Affects Vehicle Efficiency

GMC Hummer EV surprised with its power and great technological capabilities. However, the GMC EV has a weak spot as it is considered to be an extremely heavy vehicle, which reduces its efficiency compared to other electric vehicles such as the Ford F-150 Lightning.

He may have turned the electric page, but there appear to be some remnants of the old Hummer he just couldn't leave behind, at least according to a report released Tuesday by Car and Driver.

The weight of the GMC Hummer EV is too big

By that we mean the new GMC Hummer EV has a claimed curb weight of 9,063 47 pounds and a "not very great" efficiency of 3500 mpg. Now, while it should be obvious that electric vehicles are generally heavier than their combustion engine counterparts, the curb weight that GM reported to the EPA seems more than a little egregious. For comparison, the 4 GMC Sierra 2022 HD AT8 Crew Cab 6.6L V7,059 Diesel weighs XNUMX lbs.

How does the Hummer EV compare to the competition?

To get some idea, Ford estimates a range of around 300 miles (for which Ford claims a curb weight of around 6,500 pounds) with a 131 kWh extended range battery, while the Rivian R1T with the optional Max Pack battery claims 400 miles (although this is pending EPA review). In addition, the Rivian, however, received a 70 mpg rating from the EPA, which makes the Hummer's 47 mpg even worse.

Weak spot for Hummer EV

GM claims a maximum range of 329 miles for its flagship Edition 1 model. Considering all that weight, plenty of room for batteries, and GM's much-touted Ultium battery technology, that's a pretty disappointing figure. Oh, and that range figure is 329 miles? This is the use of a whopping 212,7 kilowatt-hours of electricity. Obviously, weight and aerodynamics, along with over 1,000 horsepower, take their toll here.

However, range isn't everything, and while the Hummer looks rather inefficient overall, it's still powerful enough to go off-road. Plus, he looks great, which means something.
