Adjust your headrest!

Adjust your headrest! The headrest protects the cervical spine from numerous, often very serious injuries.

In an accident, the force of inertia first pushes the moving vehicle forward and then abruptly throws the body back. Then the headrest is the only protection of the cervical spine from numerous, often very serious injuries.

Nearly three-quarters of drivers do not adjust their head restraints, either downplaying their role or simply not knowing how to properly adjust them, according to BBC/Thatcham UK research centre. In this case, the head restraints must be installed at such a height that Adjust your headrest! so that the driver and passengers can touch the center of the headrest at the center of the headrest. It is not advisable to install the head restraint above or below the center of the head, because then it does not fulfill its role, i.e. it does not stabilize the head in the event of a collision.

Women are twice as likely to be at risk of whiplash in a collision, as they tend to lean more over the steering wheel while driving with their head away from the head restraint. Even with a slight impact, the head leans forward sharply and the posterior ligaments of the spine are damaged, and then, in the absence or incorrect position of the headrest, the anterior ligaments can be torn when the head is pulled back, says orthopedic surgeon Andrzej Staromłyński to the instability of the spine and, as a result, to discopathy and degenerative changes. In more serious collisions, arms and legs can be paralyzed and even killed.

Headrests, like seat belts or an airbag, are an element of passive safety. They are an essential part of the vehicle.
