What does trouble code P0001 mean?

This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is a generic transmission code, which means it applies to OBD-II equipped vehicles, including but not limited to Ford, Dodge, Vauxhall, VW, Mazda, etc. vary by brand / models.

P0001 is not a very common trouble code and is more common on common rail diesel (CRD) and/or diesel engines, and vehicles equipped with gasoline direct injection (GDI).

This code refers to the electrical system as part of the fuel volume regulator system. Automotive fuel systems are composed of many components, fuel tank, fuel pump, filter, piping, injectors, etc. One of the components of high pressure fuel systems is the high pressure fuel pump. Its task is to increase the fuel pressure to the very high pressure required in the fuel rail for the injectors. These high pressure fuel pumps have low and high pressure sides as well as a fuel volume regulator that regulates the pressure. For this P0001 code, it refers to an "open" electrical sensing.

This code is associated with P0002, P0003 and P0004.

Symptoms

Code P0001 will cause the Check Engine light on the dash/dashboard to come on and will likely affect:

  • Engine operation while driving
  • Possible stop
  • This can cause different colors of smoke from black to white to be seen from the exhaust pipe.
  • Fuel economy won't be effective
  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) Illumination
  • The car will not start
  • Sluggish mode is on and / or no power

  • Damaged fuel pump
  • ECM damaged

Possible solutions

First, check the reputed Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) for your year / make / model. If there is a known TSB that solves the problem, it could save you time and money while diagnosing.

Next, you will want to visually inspect the wiring and connectors related to the fuel regulator circuit and system. Pay attention to obvious wire breaks, corrosion, etc. Repair as necessary.

The Fuel Volume Regulator (FVR) is a two-wire device with both wires returning to the PCM. Do not apply direct battery voltage to the wires, otherwise you may damage the system.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing Code P0001

Simply replacing the fuel pressure regulator will never guarantee a successful repair in solving your problem. This can be caused by several of the components listed above and others.

Performing a visual inspection and testing of the vehicle with the scan tool and other specific equipment listed above will confirm your problem before wasting money and time on an unnecessary fuel pressure regulator replacement.

The electrical signals require evaluation with a scan tool and a voltmeter to determine if the fuel pressure regulator needs to be replaced or if there is another problem. Additional testing may be required.

How serious is the P0001 code?

Trouble Code P0001 can cause your vehicle to not start, you may experience:

  • Inefficient fuel economy
  • Fuel instability that can damage your engine
  • Potentially damage catalytic converters, which is an expensive repair.
  • Prevent the passage of emissions

What repairs can fix code P0001?

The most common potential repairs to resolve a P0001 code are as follows:

  • Connect a professional scanner. Make sure the code exists.
  • Check for other faults. Erase the trouble code to see if it comes back.
  • Analyze the data from the ECM.
  • Road test car.
  • Check if error P0001 is returned.
  • Check all the items listed above. (wiring, leaks, etc.)
  • Next, diagnose the problem with the equipment listed above (scanner, voltmeter). The signals from the sensor must be analyzed to determine where the problem exists. If everything is in order with the signals, then you need to move towards the wiring or the computer.
  • Replace defective component, wiring or ECM (programming required) .

Additional comments to consider regarding code P0001

Any problem with the sensor can occur continuously or intermittently. Some trouble codes may take longer to diagnose. With this particular code, the solution might be simple or take a long time to diagnose and fix. Depending on your vehicle, it may take several hours to determine the root cause and repair.

I've come across this code before mostly on Ford vehicles. After using a scan tool and monitoring the voltage, I was able to determine if the fuel pressure regulator, wiring, ECM, or fuel pump was at fault. With a scanner attached, I usually evaluate the data by checking the fuel pressure and using a voltmeter to make sure all the readings match. If the values ​​do not match, then additional diagnostics are required.

The cause could be a sensor, wiring problems could be another engine component burning or rubbing from a previous repair, rodents like to gnaw on wires, or you could have a faulty ECM. Scanner verification required. Then we will determine where the fault lies. We could clear the trouble code/light first and then see if the Check Engine light comes back and move on. This could be a strange occurrence due to bad gas or weather or a constant problem.

High mileage vehicles (over 80 miles) may simply need a regulator. But replacing parts based on code is not recommended.
