What does trouble code P0014 mean?

This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is a generic transmission code, which means it applies to OBD-II equipped vehicles including but not limited to Toyota, VW, Honda, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Audi, Acura, etc.

Code P0014 refers to the VVT ​​(Variable Valve Timing) or VCT (Variable Valve Timing) components and the vehicle's PCM (Powertrain Control Module) or ECM (Engine Control Module). VVT is a technology used in an engine to give it more power or efficiency at various points of operation.

It consists of several different components, but the P0014 DTC is specifically related to camshaft (cam) timing. In this case, if the cam timing exceeds the set limit (over-growth), the engine light will illuminate and a code will be set. Bank 1 is the side of the engine that contains cylinder #1. Camshaft "B" must be an "exhaust", "right" or "rear" camshaft. Left/Right and Front/Rear are defined as if viewed from the driver's seat.

  • Defective directional valve control solenoid (stuck open)
  • The exhaust camshaft extended too far when the ECM commanded the camshaft to slow down to a lower timing level.
  • The viscosity of the oil is too high and the passages become clogged, resulting in restricted oil flow to and from the camshaft shifters.
  • The camshaft phaser is locked in the forward position.
  • The oil control solenoid on the camshaft axis 1 may be shorted in the open position.

This DTC is the result of a mechanical problem with the VCT or related components, so an electrical diagnosis is not necessary.
