"B" Camshaft Timing Actuator Chain (Bank 2)

What does this mean?

This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is a generic transmission code, which means it applies to OBD-II equipped vehicles including but not limited to Toyota, VW, Ford, Dodge, Honda, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Audi, Acura, etc. D.

Code P0023 refers to the VVT (Variable Valve Timing) or VCT (Variable Valve Timing) components and the vehicle's PCM (Powertrain Control Module) or ECM (Engine Control Module). VVT is a technology used in an engine to give it more power or efficiency at various points of operation.

It consists of an oil control valve (OCV), also called a solenoid valve, and other components. This source says it best:

The camshaft position (CMP) actuator is controlled by the powertrain control module (PCM) through the high control circuit and the low reference circuit. The high level control circuit sends a 12V pulse width modulated (PWM) signal from the PCM to the CMP actuator solenoid to control the amount of engine oil flow to the cam phase shifter. The low voltage reference circuit is used as a return circuit. The PCM has the ability to monitor the functionality of the high control circuit and the low reference circuit. If the PCM detects an open, a short to ground, or a short to voltage, DTC P0023 will set.

Camshaft "B" refers to the exhaust, right or rear camshaft (as viewed from the driver's seat). Bank 2 refers to the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder # 1.

symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Check Engine Light (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is on
  • Rough move
  • Other symptoms may also be present

reasons

The P0023 code may mean that one or more of the following events have occurred:

  • Defective oil control valve (OCV)
  • Open or short circuit in OCV / solenoid valve
  • Damaged computer (PCM)

Possible solutions

Ideally, you should consult your factory service manual for specific steps and specifications for the brand and model. You must use a digital volt ohm meter (DVOM) and measure the resistance of the terminals on the oil camshaft control valve (OCV). Refer to factory specifications for indications, if not appropriate, replace OCV assembly. Also use the DVOM to check wiring, connectors, etc., leading from the OCV back to the PCM.
