What does this mean?

This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is a generic transmission code, which means it applies to OBD-II equipped vehicles. Although general, specific repair steps may differ depending on the brand / model.

The IAT (intake air temperature) sensor simply measures the temperature of the air entering the engine. The intake air temperature is important because the higher the intake air, the higher the combustion temperature. High combustion temperatures lead to increased NOx (nitrogen oxides) emissions.

To prevent these higher temperatures from causing an increased combustion temperature, the intake air duct must be intact, allowing the engine to "breathe" air that is not drawn from the engine compartment. The IAT sensor measures the air temperature using a thermistor or some kind of thermometer. The thermistor is supplied with a 5 volt reference voltage from the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) and ground. Typically, at low air temperatures, the resistance of the thermistor is high, and at higher air temperatures, the resistance decreases.

This change in resistance changes the 5V reference voltage from the PCM, thereby informing the PCM of the intake air temperature. If the PCM notices that the # 2 intake air temperature is unusually high, say 300 degrees, when the engine temperature is still relatively low, it will set P0097.

symptoms

There may be no noticeable symptoms of a P0097 code other than a MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp). However, emission testing can reveal higher NOx values ​​depending on the type of IAT failure. Or the motor may ping under load, depending on the type of IAT failure.

reasons

P0097 is usually caused by a faulty IAT # 2 (internal short circuit, open circuit, or other damage), but it can also be:

  • There is no reference voltage at the IAT sensor # 2 due to wire break
  • Excessively high intake air temperature
  • Short to ground in the signal circuit
  • Damaged IAT connector
  • Bad PCM

Possible solutions

Connect a scanner or code reader and read the IAT reading. On a cold engine, the IAT should roughly match the coolant reading as both will read the ambient temperature. If the IAT reads too high, check the IAT connector for damage. If you do not find it, disconnect the IAT sensor and recheck the reading. It should now be showing a minimum of about -20 degrees. If so, replace the IAT sensor.

But, if the reading is still high, disconnect the sensor and check the resistance at the two terminals of the wire harness. If the resistance is infinite, then the PCM itself is bad. If the resistance is not infinite, test and repair the signal circuit for a short to ground.

    I have a sandero lol, this fault appeared in the scanner. All I know is that the air conditioning had stopped working, then the mechanic redid the fuse box schematic and this failure appeared later.
    The injection light appeared for the first time with the car in motion, once when I started the car, the light did not come on, but it came on again after I started the car. That is, it appears or disappears after turning off and starting the car.
