What does code P0113 mean?

This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is a generic transmission code, which means it applies to OBD-II equipped vehicles. Although general, specific repair steps may differ depending on the brand / model.

The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors the temperature of the air entering the engine. The PCM supplies a 5 volt reference voltage to the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor.

IAT is a thermistor whose resistance changes with temperature. As the temperature rises, the resistance decreases. Low temperature leads to high signal voltage. When the PCM sees a signal voltage above 5 volts, it sets this P0113 check engine light code.

Possible symptoms

Most likely, there will be no other symptoms other than turning on the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL - Check Engine Light / Service Engine Soon).

Among the most obvious symptoms that signal this error are:

Causes of the P0113 code

The IAT sensor, located in the air filter housing of all internal combustion engines, is designed to measure intake air temperature in order to calculate the most appropriate amount of fuel to start the engine. When this sensor registers a value that no longer matches the standard values ​​set for the vehicle, DTC P0113 will automatically set. Among the most common reasons why we can trace this code, we can certainly mention:

  • Internal IAT sensor failure
  • Faulty connection at the IAT sensor
  • Open in IAT ground or signal circuit
  • Short to voltage in the IAT signal circuit or reference circuit
  • IAT harness and / or wiring routed too close to high voltage wiring (e.g. generator, spark plug cables, etc.)
  • Faulty PCM (less likely, but not impossible)

Possible solutions

First, if you have access to a scan tool, is there an IAT reading? If the IAT readings are logical, the problem is most likely intermittent. If the reading is less than -30 degrees, disconnect the connector. Install a jumper wire between the signal circuits of the harness connector and the ground circuits. The scan tool IAT temperature reading should be as high as possible. For example, it should be 280 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. If so, then there is nothing wrong with the wiring, and it may have been a connection. If not, install a jumper wire between the IAT signal circuit and chassis ground.

If the scan tool IAT reading has now reached the maximum, test for an open in the IAT ground circuit. If you do not get any reading on the scan tool, it is likely that the sensor signal is open or there is no 5V reference. Check with a DVOM (digital volt ohm meter) the 5 volt reference. If it is there, disconnect the connector on the PCM and check for continuity on the IAT signal between the PCM connector and the IAT connector.
