P0123 Throttle Position Sensor / Switch A Circuit High Input

Technical description code P0123

P0123 - Throttle Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit High Input

What does trouble code P0123 mean?

This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is a generic transmission code, which means it applies to OBD-II equipped vehicles. Although general, specific repair steps may differ depending on the brand / model.

TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) is a potentiometer mounted on the throttle body. It determines the throttle angle. When the throttle is moved, the TPS sends a signal to the PCM (Powertrain Control Module), which is the main computer that controls the vehicle. Typically a 5-wire sensor: XNUMXV reference from PCM to TPS, ground from PCM to TPS, and signal return from TPS to PCM.

The TPS sends throttle position information back to the PCM over this signal wire. When the throttle is closed, the signal is about 45 volts. With WOT (Wide Open Throttle), the TPS signal voltage approaches the full 5 volts. When the PCM sees a voltage that is above the normal upper limit, P0123 is set.

WHEN DISCOVER CODE P0123?

Excessive voltage from the throttle position sensor (TPS) is sent to the engine control module (ECM).

Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Rough idle
  • High idle speed
  • Growing
  • other symptoms may also be present

Causes of malfunction P0123

The P0123 code may mean that one or more of the following events have occurred:

  • TPS is not securely attached
  • TPS circuit: short to ground or other wire
  • Defective TPS
  • Damaged computer (PCM)
  • Faulty Throttle Position Sensor
  • Throttle position sensor harness is open or shorted.
  • Throttle position sensor circuit poor electrical connection

Possible solutions

A good starting point is always to check the Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) for your particular vehicle. Your problem may be a known issue with a known manufacturer-released fix and could save you time and money while troubleshooting.

If there are no symptoms, the simplest thing is to reset the code and see if it comes back.

If there are symptoms such as motor tripping or wobbling, carefully inspect all wiring and connectors leading to the TPS. Most likely the problem is in the TPS wiring.

Check the voltage at the TPS (see your vehicle's service manual for this specific information). If the voltage rises sharply or becomes too high (more than 4.65V with the key on and the engine off), this indicates a problem. Carefully trace each wire of the TPS harness to check for breaks, rubbing against other components, etc.

Other DTCs associated with the TPS sensor and circuit: P0120, P0121, P0122, P0123, P0124
