P0202 Cylinder 2 Injector Circuit Malfunction

OBD-II Trouble Code - P0202 - Data Sheet

Cylinder 2 injector circuit malfunction.

P0202 is a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Injector Circuit Malfunction - Cylinder 2. This can happen for several reasons and it is up to the mechanic to diagnose the specific cause of this code being triggered in your situation.

What does trouble code P0202 mean?

This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is a generic transmission code, which means it applies to OBD-II equipped vehicles. Although general, specific repair steps may differ depending on the brand / model.

P0202 means the PCM has detected a malfunction in the injector or the wiring to the injector. It monitors the injector, and when the injector is activated, the PCM expects to see a low or near-zero voltage.

When the injector is off, the PCM expects to see a voltage close to battery voltage or "high". If it does not see the expected voltage, the PCM will set this code. The PCM also monitors the resistance in the circuit. If the resistance is too low or too high, it will set this code.

  • Note . This code can be seen with P0200, P0201 or P0203-P0212. P0202 can also be seen with misfire codes and poor or rich codes.

Possible symptoms

Symptoms of this code are likely to be misfiring and rough engine performance. Bad overclocking. The MIL indicator will also light up.

  • Check for engine light
  • Rich or lean engine conditions causing poor gas mileage
  • Lack of power and poor acceleration
  • Vehicle may stutter or stall while driving and will not restart

 Causes of the P0202 code

The reasons for the engine light code P0202 can be as follows:

  • Bad injector. This is usually the cause of this code, but does not rule out the possibility of one of the other causes.
  • Short circuit in the wiring to the injector
  • Bad PCM
  • Defective or faulty fuel injector 2 cylinders
  • Defective ECU
  • Open or short circuit in cylinder 2 injector circuit harness.
  • Bad or broken electrical connection

Possible solutions

  1. First, use the DVOM to check the resistance of the injector. If it is out of specification, replace the injector.
  2. Check the voltage at the fuel injector connector. It should have 10 volts or more on it.
  3. Visually inspect the connector for damage or broken wires.
  4. Visually check the injector for damage.
  5. If you have access to an injector tester, activate the injector and see if it works. If the injector works, you probably have either an open circuit in the wiring or a blocked injector. If you don't have access to the tester, replace the injector with a different one and see if the code changes. If the code changes, then change the nozzle.
  6. On the PCM, disconnect the driver wire from the PCM connector and ground the wire. (Make sure you have the correct wire. If you are unsure, do not try) Injector should activate
  7. Replace injector

How does a mechanic diagnose a P0202 code?

First, the technician will use a scanner to find out what codes are stored in the ECM. These codes will have freeze frame data associated with each code that tells the technician what condition the vehicle was in when the fault was detected. All codes will then be cleared and the vehicle will be road tested, preferably under conditions similar to when the fault was first discovered.

The injector circuit will then be visually inspected for damaged wiring, loose or broken connectors, or damaged components. After a visual inspection, the scan tool will be used to check the operation of the injector, as well as voltage and resistance.

The DMM will then be used to check for voltage at the cylinder 2 fuel injector. The technician will then use a noid light placed between the injector and wiring to check the fuel injector pulse.

Finally, the ECM will be tested if the vehicle passes all other tests.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing Code P0202

Mistakes in vehicle repairs and diagnostics can be costly and result in the loss of valuable time and money. When performing diagnostics, it is necessary to follow all the steps in their entirety and in the correct order. Before replacing a fuel injector, the injector circuit must be fully inspected to ensure there are no other faults.

How serious is the P0202 code?

A P0202 code can lead to serious problems if left uncorrected, such as causing the car to stall and not restart. This may be the result of the ECM enabling a failsafe mode to protect the vehicle or a faulty component such as a fuel injector. In any case, it is recommended to seek professional help as soon as possible to get the car back to normal operation.

What repairs can fix code P0202?

  • Fuel injector replacement 2 cylinders
  • Repairing or replacing a faulty wiring harness
  • ECU replacement
  • Troubleshooting connection issues

Additional comments to consider regarding code P0202

The professional will use special tools in the process of diagnosing P0202. They are used to ensure accurate diagnosis and avoid guesswork. A set of indicator lights is used to control the pulse width and duration of the fuel injectors, which is an important factor in fuel delivery.

Technicians will also need an advanced scanning tool that captures real-time data and displays it as graphs. These scanners show voltage, resistance, and changes over time to aid in diagnosis.

As vehicles age and mileage, dirt and contaminants can accumulate in the fuel system, causing the fuel system to not work properly. Cleaners such as Seafoam can be used to update the system and clear the P0202 code.

I have an AVEO 2019, it gives me the P202 code, it was already physically verified and the computer was also reached, but injector 2 has intermittent pulse. The computer was changed to rule it out but the fault continues.
