OBD-II Trouble Code - P0507 - Data Sheet

Idle speed control higher than expected.

P0507 is an OBD2 Generic Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) indicating a malfunction in the idle control system. This code is related to P0505 and P0506.

What does DTC P0507 mean?

This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is a generic transmission code, which means it applies to OBD-II equipped vehicles. Although general in nature, the specific repair steps may differ depending on the brand / model. In particular, this code is more common on Chevrolet, VW, Nissan, Audi, Hyundai, Honda, Mazda and Jeep vehicles.

This P0507 code is sometimes triggered on vehicles with electronic throttle control. That is, they do not have a standard throttle cable from the accelerator pedal to the engine. They rely on sensors and electronics to control the throttle valve.

In this case, DTC P0507 (Diagnostic Trouble Code) runs when the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) detects that the engine idle speed is higher than the desired (preprogrammed) engine speed. In the case of GM vehicles (and possibly others), if the idle speed is more than 200 rpm higher than expected, this code will be set.

Possible symptoms

You will most likely notice that the idle speed is higher than normal. Other symptoms are also possible. Of course, when the trouble codes are set, the malfunction indicator lamp (check engine lamp) will come on.

  • Make sure the engine light is on
  • High speed motor
  • Idling
  • Difficult launch

Causes of the P0507 code

The P0507 DTC can be caused by one or more of the following:

  • Vacuum leak
  • Leaky air intake after throttle body
  • EGR valve is leaking
  • Faulty positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve
  • Damaged / out of order / dirty throttle body
  • Unsuccessful EVAP system
  • Defective IAC (idle speed control) or faulty IAC circuit
  • Intake air leak
  • Faulty or clogged IAC valve
  • Sludge on the throttle body
  • Faulty power steering pressure sensor
  • Generator that failed

Possible solutions

This DTC is more of an information code, so if any other codes are set, diagnose them first. If there are no other codes, check the air intake system for leaks and damage to air or vacuum. If there are no symptoms other than the DTC itself, just clean up the code and see if it returns.

If you have an advanced scan tool that can communicate with your vehicle, increase and decrease idle to see if the engine is responding properly. Also check the PCV valve to make sure it is not blocked and does not need to be replaced. Check the IAC (idle speed control), if present, make sure it works. If possible, try replacing with a new throttle body to see if that solves the problem. On Nissan Altimas and possibly other vehicles, the problem can be resolved by asking the dealer to perform the idle retraining or other retraining procedures.

COMMON ERRORS WHEN DIAGNOSING CODE P0507

Mistakes are made when simple points are overlooked because the steps are not done in the correct order or not done at all. Several different systems are involved in code P0507, and if one system is left out, the parts that are functioning properly may be replaced.

HOW SERIOUS CODE P0507 IS?

P0507 should not prevent the car from moving to a safe place after a malfunction has occurred. Idle fluctuations can cause problems for the car, but in most cases the engine will not stall.

WHAT REPAIRS CAN FIX CODE P0507?

  • Replacing or cleaning the idle valve
  • Fix intake air leak
  • Repair the charging system
  • Cleaning the throttle valve
  • Power Steering Pressure Sensor Replacement

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS TO BE AWARE OF CODE P0507

The idle valve and throttle body can build up excessive carbon deposits over time, typically over 100 miles. This buildup can cause problems with these parts, jamming them or preventing them from moving properly. A throttle body cleaner can be used to remove carbon deposits.

    Sometimes it turns off

The situation that led to this code for me is when I changed the throttle, as I suspect that the throttle has a short circuit in its sensor. Is this true, or is it the result of cleaning the exhaust sensor, or is the evaporator coil closed?
