What does DTC P060A mean?

This Generic Powertrain Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is commonly applied to many OBD-II vehicles. This may include but is not limited to Honda, Ford, Mercedes Benz, Nissan, Toyota, etc.

When the P060A code persists, it means that an internal processor error has occurred in the powertrain control module (PCM). Other controllers may also detect a PCM processor performance error and cause this type of code to be stored.

The internal control module monitoring processors are responsible for the various controller self-testing functions and the overall accountability of the internal control module. The internal controller temperature (especially the PCM) as well as several input and output signals are constantly monitored by specific controller processors.

Whenever the ignition is turned on and the PCM is energized, multiple self-checks are initiated by the internal controller processing. In addition to performing a self test on the internal controller, the Controller Area Network (CAN) also compares the signals from each individual module to ensure that each controller is working as expected. These tests are performed at the same time.

If the PCM detects a mismatch between any of the on-board controllers, indicating an internal processor error, a P060A code will be stored and a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) may illuminate. It may take several failure cycles to illuminate the MIL, depending on the perceived severity of the malfunction.

What is the severity of this DTC?

Internal control module processor codes are to be classified as Severe. A stored P060A code can suddenly and without warning result in an inability to start the engine or severe handling problems.

What are some of the symptoms of a P060A code?

Symptoms of a P060A trouble code may include:

  • Multiple handling problems
  • Abrupt or erratic automatic transmission shifts
  • Decreased fuel efficiency
  • Rough idle or stalls
  • Oscillation on acceleration
  • Lots of control issues
  • Rough or unstable automatic transmission shifting
  • Decreased fuel efficiency
  • Hard idle or stop
  • Acceleration Uncertainty

What are some of the common causes for the code?

Reasons for this code may include:

  • Faulty controller or programming error
  • Faulty controller fuse or power supply relay
  • Open or short circuit in the circuit or connectors in the CAN harness
  • Insufficient grounding of the control module
  • A common cause may be a programming error or a faulty controller.
  • Defective controller fuse or power relay
  • Connectors in wiring harness shorted or open
  • Improper grounding of the control module

Simple Engine Error Diagnosis OBD Code P060A

Here are a few steps you must follow to diagnose this DTC:

  1. Often, even a highly trained, well-equipped and experienced technician can find an accurate diagnosis of P060A difficult. There is also the problem of reprogramming.
  2. It becomes difficult to replace a damaged controller and perform a complete successful repair without the necessary reprogramming equipment. If there are ECM/PCM power codes, they must be corrected before the P060A can be diagnosed.
  3. There are many preliminary tests that can be performed before an individual controller is declared faulty. A diagnostic scanner, a digital volt/ohmmeter (DVOM) and a source of reliable vehicle information are required. The scanner must be connected to the vehicle's diagnostic port, and all stored codes and freeze frame data must be restored.
  4. It's a good idea to write this information down just in case the code confirms it's intermittent. Once all relevant information has been written, the codes should be cleared and the vehicle tested until the code is reset or the PCM goes into ready mode.
  5. When the PCM goes into ready mode, it means that the code is intermittent, requiring a more complex procedure to diagnose. The condition that causes P060A to persist may even require worsening before a diagnosis can be made. If the code resets, these short pre-test lists should continue.
  6. When trying to diagnose a P060A, information becomes the best tool. Search your vehicle information source for technical service bulletins (TSBs) that match the stored code, vehicle (year, make, model and engine), and symptoms shown. If you manage to find the correct TSB, you may end up with diagnostic information that will help you a lot.
  7. Your vehicle information source should be used to extract images of the connector face, connector pinouts, component locators, wiring diagrams, and diagnostic flowcharts parallel to the code and the vehicle in question. It is recommended to use the DVOM to check the controller power fuses and relays. Check and, if necessary, replace blown fuses. It should be noted that fuses should be tested with the circuit loaded.

What are some steps to troubleshoot the P060A?

Even for the most experienced and well-equipped professional technician, diagnosing the P060A code can be a daunting task. There is also the problem of reprogramming. Without the necessary reprogramming equipment, it will be impossible to replace the faulty controller and carry out a successful repair.

If there are ECM / PCM power supply codes, they obviously need to be corrected before attempting to diagnose the P060A.

There are some preliminary tests that can be performed before an individual controller is declared faulty. You will need a diagnostic scanner, a digital volt-ohmmeter (DVOM) and a source of reliable information about the vehicle.

Connect the scanner to the vehicle diagnostic port and get all stored codes and freeze frame data. You will want to write this information down just in case the code turns out to be intermittent. After recording all relevant information, clear the codes and test drive the vehicle until the code is cleared or the PCM enters standby mode. If the PCM enters ready mode, the code is intermittent and harder to diagnose. The condition that led to the persistence of P060A may even get worse before a diagnosis can be made. If the code is reset, continue with this short list of pre-tests.

When trying to diagnose a P060A, information can be your best tool. Search your vehicle information source for technical service bulletins (TSBs) that match the stored code, vehicle (year, make, model, and engine) and symptoms displayed. If you find the correct TSB, it can provide diagnostic information that will help you to a great extent.

Use your vehicle information source to obtain connector views, connector pinouts, component locators, wiring diagrams, and diagnostic block diagrams relevant to the code and vehicle in question.

Use the DVOM to test the fuses and relays of the controller power supply. Check and replace blown fuses if necessary. Fuses should be checked with a loaded circuit.

If all fuses and relays are working properly, a visual inspection of the wiring and harnesses associated with the controller should be performed. You will also want to check the chassis and motor ground connections. Use your vehicle information source to obtain grounding locations for associated circuits. Use DVOM to check ground integrity.

Visually inspect the system controllers for damage caused by water, heat, or collision. Any controller damaged, especially by water, is considered defective.

If the power and ground circuits of the controller are intact, suspect a faulty controller or a controller programming error. Replacing the controller will require reprogramming. In some cases, you can purchase reprogrammed controllers from the aftermarket. Other vehicles / controllers will require onboard reprogramming, which can only be done through a dealership or other qualified source.

  • Unlike most other codes, P060A is likely caused by a faulty controller or a controller programming error.
  • Check the system ground for continuity by connecting the negative test lead of the DVOM to ground and the positive test lead to the battery voltage.

    I have a UNO Way 1.4 Sporting, dualogic with push-button control, and after an intervention to repair the exchange and change the clutch kit with genuine Fiat parts, it presented this code P060A after a week that the car was running, it is a failure intermittent and it usually happens when the car is stopped for a long time, the impression that every time the problem occurs it disfigures, when programming the system again it works again for an indefinite time, I have already checked several items without great success! !!
