Unauthorized software / calibration detected

What does this mean?

This is a generic Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) applicable to many OBD-II vehicles (1996 and newer). This may include, but is not limited to, Acura, Audi, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ford, Hyundai, Jaguar, Kia, Nissan, Scion, Toyota, etc. While general, exact repair steps may vary depending on of the year. , make, model and transmission configuration.

A stored code P064F means the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an unauthorized or unrecognized software application or controller calibration error.

Installing factory software and calibrating on-board controllers is often referred to as programming. While most of the programming is done before the vehicle is delivered to the owner, on-board controllers continue to adapt to specific circumstances and learn effectively to meet the needs of individual drivers and geographic locations (among other things). Factors including power surges, excessive temperatures, and excessive humidity can contribute to software and calibration failures.

Installing the after-sales service software may cause the P064F code to persist, but this is usually temporary. Once the PCM recognizes the software and the code is cleared, it is usually not reset.

Each time the ignition is turned on and power is supplied to the PCM, several controller self-tests are performed. By performing a self-test on the controller, the PCM can monitor the serial data that is sent over the controller network (CAN) to ensure that the onboard controllers are communicating as expected. Memory functions along with software applications are checked at this time, and also periodically checked when the ignition is in the ON position.

If a problem is found in the monitoring controller software / calibration, a P064F code will be stored and a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) may illuminate.

What is the severity of this DTC?

P064F should be considered serious as it can lead to various starting and / or handling problems.

What are some of the symptoms of the code?

Symptoms of a P064F trouble code may include:

  • Delay in starting the engine or lack of it
  • Engine control problems
  • Other stored codes

What are some of the common causes for the code?

Reasons for this code may include:

  • PCM programming error
  • Faulty controller or PCM
  • Installing secondary or high performance software

What are some steps to troubleshoot the P064F?

Even for the most experienced and well-equipped technician, diagnosing the P064F code can be particularly challenging. Without access to reprogramming equipment, accurate diagnosis will be nearly impossible.

Consult your vehicle information source for technical service bulletins (TSBs) that reproduce the stored code, vehicle (year, make, model and engine) and symptoms detected. If you find an appropriate TSB, it can provide useful diagnostic information.

Start by connecting the scanner to the vehicle's diagnostic port and retrieving all stored codes and freeze frame data. You will want to write this information down just in case the code turns out to be intermittent.

After recording all relevant information, clear the codes and test drive the vehicle (if possible) until the code is cleared or the PCM enters ready mode.

If the PCM enters ready mode, the code will be intermittent and even more difficult to diagnose. The condition that led to the persistence of P064F may need to worsen before an accurate diagnosis can be made. On the other hand, if the code cannot be cleared and the symptoms of handling do not appear, the vehicle can be driven normally.

  • Check the ground integrity of the controller by connecting the negative test lead of the DVOM to ground and the positive test lead to the battery voltage.
