P2127 Throttle Position Sensor E Circuit Low Input

DTC P2127 - OBD2 Technical Description

Low level of an input signal in a chain of the sensor of position of a butterfly valve / pedal / switch "E"

Code P2127 is a generic OBD-II DTC that indicates a problem with the throttle position sensor or pedal. This code can be seen with other throttle and pedal position sensor codes.

What does trouble code P2127 mean?

This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is a generic transmission code, which means it applies to OBD-II equipped vehicles. Although general, specific repair steps may differ depending on the brand / model.

P2127 means the vehicle computer has detected that the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) is reporting too low a voltage. On some vehicles, this lower limit is 0.17–0.20 volts (V). The letter "E" refers to a specific circuit, sensor, or area of a specific circuit.

Did you customize during installation? If the signal is less than 17V, the PCM sets this code. This could be an open or short to ground in the signal circuit. Or you may have lost the 5V reference.

Symptoms

In all cases of code P2127, the Check Engine light will be on on the dashboard. In addition to the Check Engine light, the vehicle may not respond to throttle input, the vehicle may perform poorly and may stall or lack power when accelerating.

Symptoms may include:

  • Rough or low idle
  • stolling
  • Growing
  • No / slight acceleration
  • other symptoms may also be present

Causes of the P2127 code

The P2127 code may mean that one or more of the following events have occurred:

  • TPS is not securely attached
  • TPS circuit: short to ground or other wire
  • Defective TPS
  • Damaged computer (PCM)

Possible solutions

Here are some recommended troubleshooting and repair steps:

  • Thoroughly check the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), wiring connector and wiring for breaks, etc. Repair or replace as necessary
  • Check the voltage at the TPS (see your vehicle's service manual for more information). If the voltage is too low, this indicates a problem. Replace if necessary.
  • In the event of a recent replacement, the TPS may need to be adjusted. On some vehicles, installation instructions require the TPS to be properly aligned or adjusted, refer to your workshop manual for details.
  • If there are no symptoms, the problem may be intermittent, and clearing the code may temporarily fix it. If so, then you should definitely check the wiring to make sure that it is not rubbing against anything, not grounded, etc. The code may return.

How does a mechanic diagnose a P2127 code?

Mechanics will start by plugging a scan tool into the vehicle's DLC port and checking any codes stored in the ECU. There may be multiple codes, including history or pending codes. All codes will be noted, as well as the freeze frame data associated with them, which tells us the circumstances in which the car was located, such as: RPM, vehicle speed, coolant temperature and more. This information is critical when trying to reproduce symptoms.

Then all codes will be cleared, and the test drive will be performed in conditions as close to a freeze frame as possible. The technician will only attempt a test drive if the vehicle is safe to drive.

A visual inspection will then be carried out for a damaged gas pedal, worn or exposed wiring, and broken components.

The scan tool will then be used to view real-time data and monitor the throttle and pedal position sensor electronic values. These values should change as you press and release the throttle. The voltage at the pedal position sensor will then be checked.

Finally, the manufacturer's ECU testing procedure will be performed, and it will vary depending on the make and model of the vehicle.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing Code P2127

Mistakes are common when steps are not done in the proper order or skipped entirely. Even experienced technicians can miss simple problems if simple items such as a visual inspection are not followed.

How serious is the P2127 code?

In most cases, the code P2127 does not prevent the vehicle from moving to a safe place after a malfunction is detected. In rare cases, pressing the gas pedal does not cause any reaction, and the car does not move. You should not attempt to drive the vehicle when this occurs or if you experience any other serious handling problems.

What repairs can fix code P2127?

The most likely repairs for code P2127 are:

  • Repair or replacement of throttle position sensor or pedal position sensor wiring harness
  • Throttle/pedal position sensor E replaced
  • Eliminate Intermittent Electrical Connection
  • ECU replacement if necessary

Additional comments to consider regarding code P2127

In cases where pressing the gas pedal does not respond, this can be an intimidating position. In this case, do not attempt to drive the vehicle.

P2127 may require special tools when performing diagnostics. One such tool is the professional scan tool, these scan tools provide the information technicians need to properly diagnose P2127 and many other codes. Regular scan tools only allow you to view and clean up code, while professional-grade scan tools allow you to plot things like sensor voltage and provide access to a vehicle data stream that you can follow to see how values change over time.
