P2145 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Vent Control Circuit High

P2145 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Vent Control Circuit High

OBD-II DTC Datasheet

EGR Vent Control Circuit High

What does this mean?

This is a generic powertrain diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and is commonly applied to OBD-II vehicles. Car brands may include, but are not limited to, Citroen, Peugeot, Sprinter, Pontiac, Mazda, Chevy, GMC, Ford, Dodge, Ram, etc.

EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) systems are constantly monitored and regulated by the ECM (Engine Control Module) as we drive our vehicles. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) systems allow your vehicle's engine to recycle fuel / air mixtures that have gone through the combustion process but have not yet burned out completely and efficiently. By recirculating this "half-burnt" mixture and re-feeding it to the engine, EGR alone increases fuel economy, not to mention improving overall vehicle emissions.

Most EGR valves these days are electronically controlled by electric solenoids, mechanically by vacuum controlled solenoids, and various other possible ways depending on your make and model. The exhaust gas recirculation ventilation solenoid is mainly used to remove unnecessary exhaust gases to be recycled. They typically dump this unrefined exhaust back into the exhaust system for release to atmosphere after passing through catalytic converters, resonators, mufflers, etc. It is important to note that the catalytic converter will burn most of the unburned fuel. from sudden emissions of the car. The EGR vent control circuit may refer to one specific wire that is causing the malfunction, be sure to refer to your service manual to determine exactly which physical circuit you are working with here.

By monitoring and adjusting numerous sensors, switches, not to mention other systems, the ECM (Engine Control Module) has activated P2145 and / or related codes (P2143 and P2144) to let you know there is a problem with EGR vent control. scheme.

In the case of P2145, this means a high voltage has been detected in the EGR vent control circuit.

What is the severity of this DTC?

In terms of severity, I would say this is a moderate error, and I will tell you why. The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system is optional for engine operation. However, it reduces emissions and also helps your engine run smoothly in a variety of conditions, so its performance is fundamental if you want your car to perform and function optimally. Not to mention, if left on for long enough, soot passing through these systems can build up and cause future problems / problems. Maintain the EGR system in proper condition to avoid headaches.

What are some of the symptoms of the code?

Symptoms of a P2145 diagnostic code may include:

  • Reduced engine power
  • Rough engine idling
  • Poor acceleration
  • Poor fuel economy
  • CEL (check engine light) on
  • Symptom similar to engine misfire

What are some of the common causes for the code?

Reasons for this P2145 code may include:

  • Dirty / clogged EGR system (EGR valve)
  • Exhaust gas recirculation ventilation solenoid valve defective
  • Exhaust gas recirculation vent clogged
  • Vacuum leak
  • Twisted vacuum line
  • Connector problem
  • Wiring problem (open circuit, corrosion, abrasion, short circuit, etc.)
  • ECM problem

What are some of the steps to troubleshoot a P2145?

The first step in the process of troubleshooting any problem is to review technical service bulletins (TSBs) for known problems with a particular vehicle.

Advanced diagnostic steps become very vehicle specific and may require appropriate advanced equipment and knowledge to be performed accurately. We outline the basic steps below, but refer to your vehicle / make / model / transmission repair manual for specific steps for your vehicle.

Basic step # 1

The first thing you need to do is let your car's engine cool down. In most cases, EGR systems are very hot in nature as they are usually installed directly on the exhaust system. However, if you do not allow the engine to cool down properly, you risk getting burned. As already mentioned, EGR valves are often installed directly on the exhaust. Ventilation solenoids that control the ventilation of the EGR system are installed anywhere in the engine compartment, most often on the firewall. Generally speaking, the vent solenoid is a variable vacuum solenoid, so many rubber vacuum lines can run from it to the EGR system.

Remember how hot it is in here? These vacuum lines do not withstand these temperatures well, so be sure to carefully inspect these lines while observing the environment. Any burnt or broken vacuum line must be replaced or repaired. The lines are inexpensive, so I always recommend overhauling all lines with new ones, especially if you find that one of them is out of order, if one of them is out of order, most likely others are just around the corner.

Basic step # 2

Be sure to carefully check the integrity of the used seat belts. They run along and around the exhaust pipe, so it might be a good idea to tie up any loose wires or seat belts. If you find a burned-out harness and / or wire, solder the connections and make sure they are properly insulated. Inspect the ventilation solenoid for cracks and / or water ingress. Considering the fact that these sensors are exposed to the elements and are made of plastic, for the most part, you should be aware of some possible malfunctions. Also, make sure the connectors are properly electrically connected and that the tabs are intact and not broken.

Basic step # 3

If available and convenient, you can remove the exhaust gas recirculation valve to check its condition. These valves are susceptible to significant soot content. Use a carburetor cleaner and a toothbrush to remove soot from hard-to-reach areas.
