Panasonic: At Gigafactory 1 we can generate 54 GWh/year • ELECTROMAGNETICS – www.elektrowoz.pl

In April 2019, Elon Musk reported that the main brake on the production of the Tesla Model 3 was Panasonic, which did not keep up with the production of cells - it supplied them with a capacity of 23 GWh / year. However, the Japanese manufacturer now claims it is capable of producing up to 54 GWh of cells per year.

Panasonic is ready to double production of Tesla Model 3

Assuming that the average battery capacity of all Tesla Model 3s is 75 kWh, then 23 GWh of cells is enough to sell only 300-310 thousand cars a year. However, Panasonic said it has invested $1,6 billion in production lines and that it will reach 2019 GWh/year in 35 – that would equate to 460-470 vehicles per year (averages).

> Panasonic: Tesla Model Y production will lead to battery shortages

Recently, Tesla has been looking for other partners - in China, elements for the Tesla Model 3 / Y will be supplied, including LG Chem - also reports progress in the production of lithium-ion cells. Perhaps that is why, in an interview with the Financial Times, Panasonic announced that it is open to further development (source).

The Japanese manufacturer emphasizes that it has hired chemical engineers, trained them and now has 3 machine people and 200 assistants from Japan. Thanks to them, he can work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and should reach up to 54 GWh per year... We add that Gigafactory 1 only produces 2170 Tesla Model 3 cells. The 18650 versions come from Japan.

With a capacity of 54 GWh, 720 vehicles per year can be equipped with a battery. That's a high number considering Tesla's production to date – about 360-400 units sold this year are expected – but the question is whether that will be enough given the upcoming Model Y launch and Tesla Model 3/Y's potential 100kWh. :
