First combat mission

Kaman K-Max photo. Wild boar

In December 2011, the Kaman K-Max, the first unmanned helicopter, passed its baptism of fire and completed its first mission, delivering cargo to an undisclosed location in Afghanistan. Kaman K-Max is an unmanned version of a twin-rotor helicopter. This GPS-guided robot weighs 2,5 tons and can carry the same payload weight for just over 400 kilometers. The military, however, has no intention of flaunting their prized toy, so the helicopter will perform missions at night and fly at high altitudes. These types of vehicles can be very useful in Afghanistan, where pilots are endangered not only by the insurgents, but also by the terrain and weather.
