Peugeot 206 S16

After the initial excitement and lack of cars, as is often the case with newcomers, the situation gradually calms down. Not only are there enough cars, but more and more new versions appear to satisfy more and more demanding and pampered customers. The S16 is currently the top of the range hot buns in demand. I mean, of course, the buns from the Peugeot bakery. Now it will satisfy not only aesthetes, but also those who invest something more in the performance of the car. And you won't be disappointed.

Aside from slightly more prominent bumpers, aluminum wheels and the S206 lettering, the Peugeot 16 S16 has practically nothing to set it apart from the other two hundred and six on the outside. He secretly hides his origin. The interior is also not particularly shocking.

The plastic on some parts of the dashboard is even poorly processed (sharp edges). It matches better with the steering wheel, which is nicely wrapped in soft leather upholstery. The gear lever is made of sporty aluminum, but it is incredibly cold, especially on a cold winter morning. In warmer ones, however, only a slightly sweaty driver's hand slides off the smoothly polished surface. It's good to know. This is not a disaster, but it can be distracting.

If you can afford lightweight leather gloves, there will be no problem at all. Just make sure they color match the beautiful leather and Alcantara that wraps the interior of the car. Lightweight leather gloves with ventilation holes in this car are no exaggeration, they correspond to the philosophy of the S16 and practically do the job.

In fact, I have to say that the 206 S16 has more to offer than meets the eye. With the exception of aluminum pedals, aluminum gear stick, leather and Alcantara, the interior is more or less finished. Including poorly finished plastic on the dashboard and remote power window switches installed between the front seats.

Well, I'm not saying the seats are hard and sporty enough. Even oil and temperature gauges are less common, especially in the younger class of cars. Even the leather-wrapped steering wheel is straight enough and one of the best. The most pleasant surprise in this combination of sophistication and sportiness was the driving performance. In fact, this is one of the characteristics that we would expect from such a car. Sometimes we expect too much. ...

At the beginning we had little doubts, but now they are gone. The car handles well, very stiff, does not allow excessive tilt, sits well on the road, follows the wheel perfectly and to degree i - does not malnourish! I still remember very well how we shook our heads at the show last year, saying how the S16 will become an athlete if you take away its power and not add something else! So we were wrong.

The 206 S16 16-liter engine does the job perfectly. Satisfies with both performance and slightly sporty sound. Nor is he too greedy. Probably, there is also a decrease in power and electronic coordination here. Of course, this is helped by the consistency with the gearbox and chassis, so driving the SXNUMX can be a real pleasure.

While the racing origins are well hidden, or rather subtly highlighted, the Peugeot S16 cannot be boring. A car can impress not only with its appearance, but also with its characteristics. The two-liter gasoline engine had even more power years ago as you probably still remember the 306 S16 or Xsare VTS.

They also couldn't afford a six-speed gearbox. Good, because this five-speed gearbox is so much better, and above all, the engine has such distributed power and torque that it doesn't even work too much with the gearbox. They have recorded its characteristics so that it is ideally suited to the size and characteristics of the car. In general, everything is very well coordinated.

First, the S16 comes standard with only three doors. The lateral sides are therefore longer and therefore access to the inside is a little more difficult. But we know this anyway, since this is a feature of all such cars. Form is more important here.

Due to its shape, it also has the disadvantage that only the top edge of the roof and what is happening immediately behind the car can be seen in the rearview mirror. It is set too high or the rear edge of the roof is too low (shape!). What happens a little further remains a mystery, and whether or not exterior mirrors should be used.

But don't get discouraged by the little things. Enthusiasm for engine and performance will prevail, and a spectacle of beauty is not a negligible value either. At the time we returned the test car, there were even several S-206s in stock. I almost doubt they are still there. In my opinion, soon it will be necessary to write a line in the style: WANTED, DEAD OR LIVE. Of course with attached figurine 16 SXNUMX.

evaluation

  • The mix of ready-to-wear and sports accessories tends to lean towards sportiness over time. This is largely due to the sufficiently powerful engine, the coordinated gearbox, and the good driving characteristics thanks to the chassis. The restrained appearance does not betray all that the car has to offer. Considering that we get such a car for less than three million tolar (even if we recall the air conditioner and CD changer in the equipment), the choice is really good.
