Bad and good advice on how to protect the license plate from sticking dirt and snow

Maintaining the cleanliness of the license plate is the direct responsibility of the car owner. This is especially true in the autumn-spring period. According to Part 1 of Art. 12 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, for unreadable state signs, you can get a fine in the amount of 500 to 5000 rubles, and in exceptional cases, even lose your rights.

bad advice

A popular but bad recommendation for protecting plates from dirt build-up is to use screen protectors or glass. The appearance and technical characteristics of the license plate are regulated by GOST R 50577-93. It contains a direct ban on the use of any materials that cover the surface of the plate. This list includes soft film, organic glass, and other similar coatings. This requirement is justified by a decrease in the readability of the license plate, especially for cameras of automatic recording of offenses.

Noticing such additional protection, the traffic police inspector has the right to issue a fine to the driver, provided for in paragraph 2 of Art. 12.2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation "Driving a vehicle with modified or poorly identifiable license plates." The variant of punishment under this article is a fine of 5000 rubles or deprivation of the right to drive a car for up to three months.

Good advice

It is possible to protect license plates from sticking dirt and dust, however, this will require little effort. Necessary:

  1. Thoroughly rinse, clean and dry each plate using non-abrasive products. If heavily soiled, they will have to be dismantled from the car for cleaning.
  2. Purchase any hydrophobic compound at an automotive or hardware store. The most affordable and budgetary among such funds is WD-40.
  3. Spray the water-repellent preparation evenly over the entire surface of the sign. Wait for the plates to dry completely and return them to the car.

Aerosol WD-40 (and similar products) - a completely transparent and invisible spray. Its application does not affect the ability of cameras to identify alphanumeric designations. He is also invisible to the traffic police inspector. This method of protection has only one significant drawback - it is necessary to repeat the operation in the off-season at least once every 3-4 days.
