Stellantis has revealed how it plans to make the transition to electricity.

Tesla will lose one of its biggest customers, costing it nearly $500 million.

This comes as Stellantis, a strong 14-brand conglomerate formed from the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group Peugeot-Citroen, has committed to building its own range of electric vehicles. Prior to the merger, FCA spent about $480 million buying carbon credits from Tesla to meet European and North American emission standards, offsetting the lack of electric vehicle models.

Stellantis made the decision back in May, but overnight explained how it plans to achieve its own low-emissions future by investing 30 billion euros (about $47 billion) over the next five years in four new electric vehicle platforms, three electric motors and a pair of electric motors. battery technologies to be built at five gigafactories.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said the decision to not buy Tesla credits was "ethical" because he believed the brand should comply with emissions regulations itself rather than exploiting the credit-buying loophole.

The goal of this investment is to significantly increase sales of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in Europe and the US by the end of the decade. By 2030, Stellantis hopes that 70% of cars sold in Europe will be low emission and 40% in the US; this is more than the 14% and just four percent that the company forecasts in these markets, respectively, in 2021.

Tavares and his management team pitched the plan to investors on the first day of EV overnight. Under the plan, all of its 14 brands, from Abarth to Ram, will start electrifying if they haven't already.

“Perhaps our path to electrification is the most important brick to lay as we begin to uncover the future of Stellantis just six months after its birth, and the entire company is now in full implementation mode to exceed every customer’s expectations and accelerate our role in rethinking. how the world moves,” Tavares said. “We have the scale, skills, spirit and resilience to achieve double-digit adjusted operating margins, lead the industry with benchmark efficiency, and build electrified vehicles that spark passion.”

Some of the highlights of the plan:

  • Four new electric vehicle platforms - STLA Small, STLA Medium, STLA Large and STLA Frame.
  • The three transmission options are based on a scalable inverter for cost savings.
  • Nickel-based batteries that the company believes will save money while providing ultra-fast charging over long distances.
  • The goal is to be the first automotive brand to bring a solid state battery to market in 2026.

The baseline for each new platform was also laid out as follows:

  • STLA Small will be mainly used for Peugeot, Citroen and Opel models with a range of up to 500 km.
  • STLA Medium to support future Alfa Romeo and DS vehicles with a range of up to 700 km.
  • The STLA Large will be the basis for several brands including Dodge, Jeep, Ram and Maserati and will have a range of up to 800 miles.
  • The frame is STLA, it will be designed for commercial vehicles and Ram pickups, and will also have a range of up to 800 km.

A key element of the plan is that the battery packs will be modular so both hardware and software can be upgraded over the life of the vehicle as technology improves. Stellantis will invest heavily in a new software division that will focus on creating over-the-air updates for new models.

The power units of the module will consist of:

  • Option 1 - power up to 70 kW / electrical system 400 volts.
  • Option 2 - 125-180kW/400V
  • Option 3 - 150-330 kW / 400 V or 800 V

The powertrains can be used with either front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, as well as with the proprietary Jeep 4xe layout.

Some of the key brand decisions announced by the company include:

  • By 1500, Ram will introduce an electric 2024 based on the STLA Frame.
  • Ram will also introduce an all-new STLA Large-based model that will compete with the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger.
  • Dodge will introduce the eMuscle by 2024.
  • By 2025, Jeep will have EV options for every model and will introduce at least one brand new "white space" model.
  • By 2028, Opel will go all-electric and introduce the Manta electric sports car.
  • A brand new Chrysler SUV concept with a high-tech interior was demonstrated.
  • Fiat and Ram will launch fuel cell commercial vehicles starting in 2021.
