Why You Should Never Leave Your Dog in the Car - Even Temporarily

Dogs are tough animals and can handle a lot, but heat is not one of them. Quartz experts believe that leaving your best friend in a closed car is a gross and sometimes fatal mistake - even for fifteen minutes.

This is because a closed compartment in a car heats up extremely quickly. Even on a cool day with temperatures around 22 degrees Celsius, an hour in the sun is enough, and the temperature in the car jumps to 47 degrees.
On a moderately warm day (27 degrees), 10 minutes is enough for the temperature in the car to rise to 37 degrees. At an outside temperature of 32 degrees in ten minutes, the cabin will be as much as 49 degrees.

Remember that humans are better adapted to the heat than their pets. It is more difficult for dogs to cool down, and if their body temperature reaches 41 degrees, they risk getting heatstroke, from which only about 50% survive. At 44 degrees, circulation is impaired, leading to bleeding and kidney failure. In hot environments, a dog can reach that body temperature in just 6 minutes. And don't think that a slightly open window improves the situation in particular.

“Please don't break the glass. The air conditioner works, there is water in it, and listens to your favorite music. " In some US states, it is perfectly legal to crash someone else's car to save a dog from heatstroke.

Quartz insists that there is no safe period for leaving a dog in a car unless you leave the engine and A/C on, but this is not recommended for other reasons. In some places, such as the US state of California, a person is legally allowed to break a foreign car window if a dog is locked inside.
