Why Eliminating Exhaust Leaks Is Critical to Performance

Any gearbox or driver knows how important your vehicle's exhaust system is. After all, it is responsible for reducing noise, converting harmful gases, и productivity increase. Thus, if the exhaust system is not working properly, especially if fluids are leaking from it, performance and fuel economy will be adversely affected.

Exhaust System Basics

The exhaust consists of three main components: the exhaust manifold, the catalytic converter, and the muffler. These 3 components of an exhaust system work together to make sure the system works properly. The process begins with a manifold near the engine, and then the gases that are converted in the catalytic converter are transferred to the rear of the car.

This system also includes flexible tubing, oxygen sensors, gaskets and clamps, and resonator tube accessories. Needless to say, a lot depends on the exhaust system and its success. With all these individual parts, it can also be difficult to keep track of how well each part is performing; and more importantly, keep track of how long the exhaust system will last. Exhaust system complexity is another good reason to have your car inspected annually.

What does an exhaust leak mean?

Exhaust leaks are no joke. Unlike a flat tire or a dead battery, an exhaust leak is more difficult. It can be difficult to determine its cause and then fix the underlying problem.

An exhaust leak occurs when the gases produced by the combustion of an engine escape before reaching the exhaust pipe. As mentioned above, a serviceable car emits all of its exhaust gases through the tailpipe.

Exhaust leaks are problematic for three main reasons. Since the escaping gases are probably not safe enough to be released into the environment, leaks can pose a risk to the environment. Similarly, an exhaust leak can pose a risk to the driver and passengers of a vehicle. In terms of vehicle performance, exhaust leaks are harmful because they can hide the vehicle's sensors. As a result, the engine may burn too much or not enough fuel.

Exhaust Leaks and Performance

The efficiency of the exhaust system directly affects the performance of the vehicle. How well the exhaust can convert and pass gases through the tailpipe, the less the car has to run and the better it performs. Consequently, exhaust gas leakage will adversely affect performance. An unhealthy exhaust system (those that leak) works harder and doesn't work 100%. In addition, leaks can trigger sensors that tell the engine proper fuel readings.

Signs of an Exhaust Leak

Unfortunately, you may not notice an exhaust leak right away. With such complex car parts, it may not be fully visible until something serious happens to your car (like a breakdown) or until it is inspected by a mechanic. But here are a few signs to look out for to see if there is a leak in your car's exhaust system:

  • Whistling sounds
  • excessive vibration
  • Poor fuel economy (Because, after all, fuel efficiency and exhaust also go hand in hand. Especially if the exhaust is custom-made.)
  • Check engine light
  • Or rattling next to the catalytic converter

Don't fall victim to exhaust problems. Transform your car

The last thing you want to put aside is an exhaust leak and let this problem grow into something more. When this happens, you end up needing a full exhaust system repair or replacement. And if you're interested in signs that you should replace your exhaust system, we've got you covered too. So what can you do to get ahead of any problems? Upgrade your exhaust with aftermarket changes. The benefits of a custom exhaust will make you and your car float in the air. The Performance Muffler team has specialized in custom exhaust systems since 2007. And we're proud to call ourselves the best store in the Phoenix area. In addition, we have expanded to add locations in Glendale and Glendale.
