Why electric car drivers don't want to go back to petrol cars

New study shows that once you switch to electricity, you won't go back

A study by Zap-Map, an online service that shows electric car charging points in the UK, found that less than 1% of electric car owners want to switch back to petrol cars. The survey was conducted among electric vehicle (EV) drivers in the UK using Zap-Map.

The survey surveyed 2,000 EV drivers, showing that the vast majority of them would not go back to cars or diesel.

“The results strongly suggest a fundamental shift in consumer attitudes towards green cars. In a November 2020 survey of more than 2,000 respondents, 91% said “no thanks” to replacing their electric vehicles with petrol or diesel vehicles; and, conversely, less than 1% wanted to return to fossil fuels. 9% said they were not sure.

Interestingly, all-electric cars get a higher satisfaction rating than plug-in hybrids.

“The majority of respondents were first-time EV drivers: 73% said their current car was their first EV, and 52% made a purchase within the last year. Driver satisfaction was notably higher for plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles, with EV drivers reporting a score of 91 out of 100 (BEV 92, PHEV 84) compared to 72 for petrol or diesel vehicles.”

Among all-electric vehicles, the VW ID.3 achieved a 100% satisfaction score, followed by the Kia e-Niro and Kia e-Niro with 96%.

Melanie Shufflebotham, co-founder of Zap-Map, commented on the survey results: “Our latest survey shows the strong and lasting impact of moving to a clean car. The evidence for electric vehicles is getting stronger with each of our surveys, even in a devastating year like 2020.”

In the UK, 2020 was a good year for electric vehicles, with sales up while the car market as a whole saw a downturn. As a result, the market share of electric vehicles more than tripled and accounted for 9,7% of all new car sales in the country.
