Why fills spark plugs: on the injector, carburetor

Often, motorists are faced with such a problem: the battery is charged, the starter spins, but the engine does not “catch”. That is, it simply does not start. In such cases, it is said that wetting or flooding of spark plugs occurs. With what it can be connected?

Fills spark plugs when starting a cold engine

Winter is a time of continuous problems for the motorist. Not only do you need to change tires and carry out anti-corrosion treatment of the body. So after all, often the car will not start, although all systems work normally. It is especially difficult if the car is not in a heated garage, but directly in the open.

We have previously written on Vodi.su that a cold start is fraught with many problems, in particular, the early wear of the CPG (cylinder-piston group). At sub-zero temperatures, other systems, such as ignition, also fail. That is why it is impossible to start, even if the battery has enough charge to spin the starter.

Why is candle lighting happening? Everything is pretty simple. How does the engine actually start? Let's describe this process:

  • The battery supplies a charge to the starter;
  • the bendix gear engages with the crankshaft;
  • at the same time the charge is supplied to the ignition system;
  • through high-voltage wires, the load enters the candles and they give out a spark;
  • the injector nozzles inject an air-fuel mixture into the combustion chambers, which begins to detonate from a spark.

Candles are sometimes the weak link in this chain. That is, the fuel mixture is injected, but does not ignite, and therefore simply settles on the electrodes, cylinder walls and pistons. Candles become wet and fail to spark. Further attempts to start the engine will not lead to anything.

Causes of the problem

The most obvious reason is an increase in the gap between the spark plug electrodes.. The spark is weak. In this case, it remains to simply replace the candles with new ones. There may be other problems with the ignition system, for example, candle tips are poorly fixed, or the high-voltage wire could not withstand the load and burned out.

Another common cause is a weak battery, which is not enough to supply voltage to the ignition.. In this case, you will either have to remove the battery and carry it for charging, or “light it up” from another car.

The third reason is the injection system and incorrect operation of the computer. We once talked on Vodi.su about a lean and rich air-fuel mixture. To improve the starting process, the control unit specifically instructs the injection system to artificially enrich the mixture, that is, the percentage of gasoline in it will exceed the norm. But if the battery is discharged or the candle gives a weak spark, no ignition will occur.

We note right away that this happens much less frequently on injection engines. Yes, and the ECU is configured in such a way that when the engine is not started the first time, the fuel supply is stopped so that the candles are not flooded.

On a carburetor engine, for example, on a VAZ 21099 or 21083, there is a suction knob that regulates the carburetor air damper. Drivers often close the choke completely to get the most enriched mixture into the combustion chambers. But if the battery or candles cannot generate a normal spark, then ignition does not occur.

The following problems should not be underestimated:

  • low quality fuel, which evaporates poorly at low temperatures;
  • high content of various additives in gasoline;
  • formation of condensate in the fuel tank and its mixing with gasoline.

Also, with a decrease in the level of compression and wear of the oil scraper rings, it is quite likely that the candles are filled with engine oil. A similar problem is possible in other cases: cracks in the CPG and cylinder head, wear on valve stem seals (oil seals) or their guides, wear on the head gasket.

What to do if it floods the candles?

The instructions say to dry them first. Well, or immediately replace with new ones. You can dry them in different ways: unscrew and put on a battery or even on a hot stove. But it takes a lot of time.

Drivers in a hurry prefer another way (on the injector):

  • press the gas pedal to the maximum;
  • we scroll the crankshaft with a starter for about 5-10 seconds;
  • release the gas pedal;
  • trying to start in normal mode.

When the gas pedal is depressed, the throttle valve is fully open and air enters the cylinders. And under the influence of pressure, when the piston goes up, the air temperature rises and the candle is blown with a warm air stream.

In any case, the editors of Vodi.su recommend that a complete diagnosis of the engine be carried out so that such troubles do not recur. Pay special attention to the condition of the ignition and injection systems. Compression check will not be superfluous. If it is too low, you will have to look for the cause and spend money on repairs.
