Ascent and descent by car

Ascent and descent by car According to weather forecasts, the cold winter has returned. Driving on ice and snow requires additional skills and knowledge from drivers.

All maneuvers in winter should be performed calmer and slower in order to leave yourself a large error. Ascent and descent by carThis is especially dangerous when there is a large temperature range in short periods of time and we constantly have to get used to new conditions, says Zbigniew Veseli, director of the Renault driving school.

Uphill

When we want to overcome a slide, knowing that the surface can be slippery, we must:

  • keep a very long distance from the car in front and even - if possible - wait until the cars in front of you have reached the top
  • avoid stops when going uphill
  • maintain a constant speed according to the conditions
  • Shift into a suitable gear before starting uphill to avoid downshifting while driving.

Climbing uphill in a traffic jam in winter, you should first of all remember that the distance between vehicles is several times greater than usual. The car in front of us may slip a little when moving on a slippery surface. Additional stretching may be required to regain traction and avoid an accident, Renault driving school instructors advise.

Downhill

When descending a mountain in winter weather, you should:

  • slow down before the top of the hill
  • use a low gear
  • avoid using the brake
  • Leave as much distance as possible from the vehicle in front.

On a steep slope, when vehicles traveling in opposite directions find it difficult to avoid overtaking, the downhill driver should stop and give way to the uphill driver. It may not be possible for a car going uphill to move again, the coaches explain.
