Alpina pumped up the BMW X7 to create the XB7 large luxury SUV.

Alpina has lifted the silk on its latest model, the X7-based XB7 large luxury SUV that will sit at the top of BMW's line of SUVs with added performance and luxury.

The XB7 is powered by the familiar 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine also used in the M versions of the X5/X6, 8 Series and 5 Series, but under the Alpina bonnet, the engine delivers 457kW/800Nm.

That's 3kW less but 50Nm more than the X5/X6M, M8 and M5 competition versions.

With power sent to all four wheels via an Alpina-tuned eight-speed automatic transmission, the XB7 can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 290 km/h.

However, the high volume and the V8 petrol engine don't come without a cost, in this case fuel economy rated at 13.9 liters per 100 km. CO2 emissions, meanwhile, are pegged at 316g/km.

Other changes to the XB7 include the addition of two water coolers and a larger transmission oil cooler, paired with a boosted engine.

The Alpina XB7 also boasts a retuned air suspension with a 40mm lower ride height, a new steering setup, a stainless steel sports exhaust, an electronically adjustable limited slip rear differential and 23-inch wheels as an option.

Inside, all seven seats are upholstered in Lavalina leather, while the iDrive controller is complemented by crystal glass with a laser-etched Alpina logo.

The Alpina XB7 is due to land on Australian shores early next year, though pricing and specifications have yet to be determined.

Expect the Alpina-tuned model to rank above the standard X7 range, which tops out at $175,900 before the road costs of the M50i variant.
