This term refers not only to extremely important parts of the passive safety system, but also to the fastening elements of the drive system.
The task of the latter is to provide the engine and gearbox with a sufficiently rigid mounting, however, capable of damping vibrations created by the drive unit during operation, and so that they are not transmitted to the body. This method has been provided by metal and rubber elements for many years. In addition to conventional cushions, where vibration damping depends only on the properties of the rubber, oil-damped cushions are also common.
The decrease in the damping properties of the power unit support pillows manifests itself in different ways. In the initial phase, when the loss of the ability to eliminate unnecessary shocks is insignificant, slight vibrations appear in the running engine. Such a symptom can be confusing, because, for example, the engine reacts similarly to minor violations in the idle stabilization system. If at least one of the airbags has lost its damping properties to a large extent, there may be a pronounced swaying of the drive system, which is most easily observed when starting or turning off the engine. Rocking can be accompanied by impacts of the drive unit or permanently connected parts on the body, suspension, etc., located in its immediate vicinity (shifting with the so-called indirect control).
Damaged pillows are best replaced as a set. If only the damaged one is replaced, the remaining ones, due to the aging process, already have slightly different damping characteristics (compared to new ones), which can affect the damping efficiency of the entire system. Secondly, pillows that have not been replaced are definitely less durable and can be damaged in a short time. When replacing a set of pads, we can be sure that they all have the same level of performance as intended and will last the same amount of time.
