We buy a booth for a dog - which one to choose?

Let's say right away - there is no universal kennel suitable for every dog. Its size should correspond to the height and length of the dog. This guide will help you with this.

/ Interspecies family

When looking for a dog kennel, we should start with the question: Will our dog feel comfortable living outside? There are breeds of dogs that are completely unsuitable for life in the garden and such a lifestyle will negatively affect their health and well-being. There are also those who love to be outdoors, and by leaving them at home, we deprive them of the opportunity to satisfy their needs. Even if the pet has a permanent place in the house, the kennel can be an additional shelter in the garden or its main home if the dog definitely prefers to live outside.

Which dogs should not live in a kennel?

A hut in a garden certainly cannot be a permanent refuge for short haired dogs, such as doberman, pointer, amstaff. Moreover, they will not find themselves in it. small breed dogs Jak dachshund or pinscher due to the fact that the kennel is heated by the heat of the animal's body - small dogs are not able to warm up normally in such conditions. Prolonged exposure to low temperatures leads to cooling of the body, which means illness and even death. They shouldn't live in the garden as well companion dogs such as. king charles spaniel cavalier, Pekingeseand all puppies daily with a pro-human attitude, strongly attached to the guardian, need close contact with a person to maintain their well-being.

It is also unacceptable to be locked in a pen or chained. Regardless of whether the dog spends most of the time on the site or at home, it needs daily walks, joint activities with a person, grooming and attention. You should also remember that even seemingly large dogs with thick hair, such as German Shepherds, can freeze with a sharp drop in temperature - make sure that the dog is not cold at night and, if necessary, we will provide a heated shelter.

How to choose a dog house?

In order for the kennel to fulfill its role of keeping the dog warm on winter nights and keeping cool on summer afternoons, its size must be adapted to our dog and whether our dog needs shelter outside, or will feel better if he has his own place in the house.

For a dog house to be comfortable, it must be of a size that allows the pet to freely enter and exit, as well as to take a comfortable position during rest. The kennel cannot be too large, as the dog will have a problem warming it with his body, and an inlet that is too large will lead to heat loss.

The width and length of the kennel should be about 20 cm larger than the lying, curled up dog.

To calculate the optimal height of the kennel, add a few centimeters to the height of the sitting dog.

The entrance hole should be about the height of the dog at the withers and a few centimeters wider than the dog.

Types of kennel for a dog

Modern kennels are more like dog kennels than fast-paced kennels from the old days. Kennels come in several sizes, we can distinguish several models according to the type of entrance, the roof and the material from which it is made.

If the dog is outside for a long time or all the time, it is necessary to insulate the kennel. Proper insulation from the ground, walls and roof insulation will provide sufficient protection for the dog during frost. Placing the kennel directly on the ground can cause moisture to enter and "pull" the bottom - the best solution is to place it on a pre-prepared base - for example, on bricks, boards, foil. If we don't have that option, we can opt for a kennel with legs that prevent the bottom of the kennel from touching the ground.

We have a choice classic kennels with a hole leading directly into the kennel. On cold days, warm air can escape through the entrance and cool the room - so if you want to choose a classic kennel, you should choose one with a PVC curtain or buy it separately. This is not an expensive solution, and it will help to effectively insulate the kennel.

We can also decide on shed with vestibule. It takes on the role of a vestibule if it is covered and the entrance is on the side - this provides better protection from the wind.

Kennel with a terrace allows the dog to lie comfortably on the boards in front of the entrance to his house - you can say, it serves as a porch.

The most popular kennel material is impregnated wood, which keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter. A wooden insulated house is an excellent choice for Polish conditions. Also on sale there are plastic booths. They are easy to care for and light, but due to the material they are not suitable for shelter from the cold, but only for additional bedding.

Where to put a dog kennel?

The dog kennel must stand in a place protected from the sun and wind - for example, near a tree. It is better to put it further away in the yard so that the dog has the opportunity to rest in peace, without worrying about the sounds of the street. Placing the kennel too close to the road can lead to constant barking - the dog does not distinguish between what we consider a threat and may bark at things that are absurd from our point of view.
