Car glass polishing in a few easy steps

You can do a lot of work on the car yourself. It's not just about cyclic wheel changes, minor repairs to the brake system, or scheduled replacement of filters and gears. Sometimes giving your car a shine is not as hard as you think. Car glass polishing and varnishing are possible at home. You also don't need very expensive visibility equipment. Check out how to do it!

How to polish car windows yourself?

You will achieve quite decent results using car glass polishes available in auto cosmetics stores. One such product is cerium dioxide, which can be bought in powder form and mixed with water. You will also need a variable speed polisher. Do not use a drill or grinder for this, as you can do more harm than good. To polish car windows with high quality, you need to do it in three stages:

  • thoroughly clean the surface of dirt and debris;
  • protect seals, rubber and plastic elements;
  • apply the paste and start the actual work.

How to polish a car window in a few steps?

Step 1 - Thorough cleaning of the element

This is not particularly difficult, but it is worth remembering a few basic rules. One of them says that polishing glass is a bit like restoring car paint - if you don’t carefully prepare the surface, you will make things worse in the process. ремонт. Fine sand particles and other hard elements effectively scratch the entire glass surface being repaired. The effect will be catastrophic. Before picking up tools, first carefully and carefully clean the glass.

It is also advisable to degrease the element with an alcohol-based product to get rid of any smudges.

Step 2 - pasting rubber and plastic elements

After making sure that the glass is clean and dry, you can proceed to the next step. It is extremely important to prevent cerium from getting on the plastic and rubber parts of the car (for example, windshield wipers). Once under these elements, it is very difficult to thoroughly clean everything. A glass polishing paste in the form of cerium powder diluted with water can, of course, be used without additional wrapping of these parts of the car. For your own mental health (later there will be difficulties with cleaning dry cerium), it is better to do this.

Step 3 - car glass polishing

When the paste is prepared and the felt disc is put on the polishing machine, you can start polishing. Have water ready in a spray bottle, with which you can constantly moisten the paste applied to the glass. If it freezes you can burn the glass. When repairing car windows, including the windshield, it is not recommended to exceed 600 rpm.

How to apply glass polish paste?

It is best to polish automotive glass on separate fragments, and not to apply the paste immediately to the entire surface. This is especially important when you do not have much experience in such jobs. When you've finished polishing, use a rag to pick up the remaining polish and check the result.

Glass polishes and effects

It is true that the best results are obtained by replacing the element with a new one. Then you can be sure that there are no flaws on such glass. However, how to explain to a potential buyer that the car was not “broken”, and you replaced the glass only because it was scratched? Sounds unreliable to say the least. In addition, such an operation is simply unprofitable, because a new window can cost up to several thousand zlotys. Windshield polishing should solve the problem of small scratches.

When is the best time to entrust car glass polishing to professionals?

However, do-it-yourself car glass polishing may not always fully satisfy you. It is simply naive to expect that the glass will be like new, because deep scratches and cracks, especially those that are felt under the nail, are difficult to remove on your own. Of course, the glass will be very clean and refreshed, and if it is not burned, it will really change, but you will never make new out of it.

Repairing scratched windows in a workshop

However, if you want to polish your windows but don't have the tools or skills, you can use the services of a professional workshop. What costs need to be considered? Much depends on the degree of damage to the glass and its surface and the price list of the company. In the case of windshield polishing, the price should not exceed 20 euros. Replace or polish? Calculate yourself and evaluate whether the exchange will be profitable. Sometimes it can be easily polished, but if you don't know how to polish a car glass to remove thick scratches, it's better to visit a workshop.
