The full version of V2G in CCS will appear by 2025. Too late? Just right?

CharIN, which promotes the CCS standard, has published plans for integrating V2G. V2G – VehicleToGrid, Car-to-the-grid is a set of solutions that allow energy stored in a car battery to be used back into the grid, for example by using a car battery as an energy storage device for a power plant.

So far, the only socket (charging system*) that fully supports V2G has been the Japanese Chademo. That's why all tests related to the use of a car battery for powering, for example, at home, used a Nissan Leaf or Mitsubishi Outlander - that is, the two most popular cars with a Chademo connector.

> Nissan: V2G? It's not about draining someone's battery

The CCS (Charging System) connector is far behind. It was said that V2G would appear in CCS 3.0, but when the 3.0 standard debuted, no one knew. The situation has simply changed.

CharIn - an organization that includes Audi, Volkswagen, Volvo, as well as Tesla and Toyota - announced that in 2019 it will introduce V2G, described in the ISO / IEC 15118 standard, using wall-mounted charging stations. After:

  • by 2020 it will be showing V1G (Controlled Charging)., i.e. the ability to control charging by the power system operator (highest priority), charging station, car owner or home power management system,
  • by 2020 it will show V1G / H (Charging Cooperation), that is, the ability to set the charging conditions on the wall charging station (EVSE) line, taking into account electricity costs, upcoming user needs or network restrictions; negotiations should be mostly automatic, without the participation of the car owner,
  • by 2025 it will feature V2H (two-way charging), i.e. the possibility of energy flow into the car battery and from her, with automatic control due to demand, network load or economic reasons, with support for operation outside the meter (behind the meter), that is, without exchanging energy with the mains,
  • by 2025 it will be showing V2G (Aggregate Charging), that is, the interaction of a car and a wall charging station (EVSE) for the purpose of using energy at home, as well as in connection with the needs of the power system (in front of the meter) or the energy producer, even in a province or country.

The full version of V2G in CCS will appear by 2025. Too late? Just right?

So far, car manufacturers affiliated with CharIn have implemented new versions of CCS very effectively and quickly reached agreement to expand the standard. Therefore, we expect the above dates to be years, when we will not only see new features but also see vehicles on the market that will support them.

*) Using the term "charging system", we want to emphasize that CCS or Chademo is not only a cable and a plug, but also a set of communication protocols that determine the possibilities of a solution.
