A Brief History of the Russian Automotive Industry
An overview of popular brands of Russian cars with badges is impossible without a brief digression into the history of the domestic auto industry.
The first mass-produced car in the USSR was the GAZ A, produced by the Gorky plant. The years of production of the model are 1932-1936. The first samples came off the assembly line with a chaise body type (folding top). In the future, production was supplemented by sedans and pickups. The car was equipped with a 3,3-liter internal combustion engine with a capacity of 40 "horses". The maximum speed of the model was 90 km per hour.
The first Russian folk car, Moskvich 400, was produced by the Moscow Automobile Plant in 1936. The car was equipped with a 1,1 liter engine with a capacity of 23 horsepower, a 3-speed manual gearbox. Initially, only 4-door sedans were made. Later, production was supplemented by other types of bodies: convertible, van, pickup.
Continuing the brief history of the Soviet-Russian automobile industry, one cannot fail to mention the auto giant VAZ, founded in 1966. The release of the first VAZ-2101 cars dates back to 1970. The famous "penny" refers to small-class models with a sedan-type body. The car has become truly popular, and its mass production has significantly expanded the domestic car market.
The undisputed leader in the production of Russian large trucks was and remains KAMAZ (Kama Automobile Plant). The enterprise was founded in 1969 in the Republic of Tatarstan (TASSR), on the territory of the city of Naberezhnye Chelny. After successful performances at the Paris-Dakar rally, KAMAZ diesel trucks have become a true legend of the Russian automobile industry.
Badges of popular Russian brands
Signs of Russian cars were developed by designers as a distinctive logo for each car factory. We present a list of popular brands of Russian cars with badges and logo design decoding.
Lada (concern Avtovaz)

In ancient times, merchants on boats transported goods along this waterway. Initially, the concern's logo was a rectangle with the abbreviation "VAZ" in the center.
The design of the emblem with the image of a rook was invented by the designer-bodybuilder of the Volga Automobile Plant (VAZ) Alexander Dekalenkov. As the legend goes, he drew a triangular sketch of the logo on a sheet of an ordinary school notebook. Over time, the icon has changed: turned into a pentagon. And in the center appeared a boat invented by Dekalenkov, stylized as the letter "B".
Over the years, the shape of the badge has changed several times. The logo again became quadrangular, the background color of the sign changed from red to black. Finally, the last sign for today was a more voluminous, vertically elongated, blue oval with a white boat in the middle.
