Porsche 991 Targa 4, our test - Sports Cars

To be honest, I've never been a big fan of gigs. Not so much because they are heavier, softer and louder than their coupe versions, but simply because I don't find them aesthetically pleasing.

Today I am in front of one Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Targa and all my prejudices about open cars are crumbling like a sand castle.

This is the last generation Porsche targa 911, 991, she is really beautiful. Much cleaner, sleeker and more charming than the previous 997 Targa. The aluminum pillar separating the rear window is reminiscent of the pillar of the first Carrera Targa from the 70s, and the bonnet folding mechanism has something mesmerizing.

La Plate this is only available in version 4 and 4SThis is because customers probably prefer to use it for leisurely walks and run miles rather than hitting track days and performing on hikes. But we'll talk about this later.

With listing price 123.867 euroThe Porsche 911 Targa 4 is priced the same as the convertible version, so choosing one or the other becomes just a matter of taste. The Targa has the best acoustic comfort - both with the hood closed and open - thanks to the rear window that prevents annoying whirlwinds; on the other hand, it doesn't offer you the ultimate plein air experience.

Turbo to whom?

Climbing aboard, we find ourselves in the familiar intimate and cozy 911 atmosphere. The feeling of solidity and quality is the result of continuous improvement that has been going on for more than fifty years.

Visibility is excellent and its compact size makes it agile and can be parked anywhere - it's as wide as a 'Audi Avant A4 and 20 cm shorter.

I turn the key to the left of the steering column – Porsche cares about tradition – and the new turbocharged 3.0-litre flat-six wakes up throaty and deep. Idling sound metallic and dry, one could say that it has a "regular" print, but this is not entirely true. Inside the cabin is much quieter, smoother and muffled, and outside there is only a large whirlwind of air that closes any note. With sports exhausts, the 911 becomes decidedly more extroverted, amplifying the metallic scream of the turbo boxer and enriching it with grunts and pops. This new 3.0-liter engine may no longer have the same range of sounds as the old naturally aspirated boxers, but it has other qualities.

"Basic" version The 3.0-liter engine produces 370 hp. at 6.500 rpm and a torque of 450 Nm. of torque between 1.700 and 5.000 rpm, but what is surprising is the delivery. If I had not been told, I would never have noticed that I have a turbo engine under the hood. Turbo lag is not minimized, it just isn't there. In any gear and at any speed, you will have a direct and instant connection between your right foot and acceleration. The power delivery is awesome too. The needle rises with increasing enthusiasm to 6.500 rpm, with progress that will remove any doubts. On the other hand, in Porsche they know how much their clients dislike the change, and the result cannot be different.

La couple however, the 3.0-litre turbo makes driving more agile and enjoyable on the road and on the highway, but large ratios require some downshifting to get the engine running. For a “normal” driver 370 hp the basic version is more than enough (0-100 in 4,5 and 287 km/h are respectable figures), but for sporty riders, the S version is needed. change PDK instead, it excels in every situation, as fast as the DSG but drier and sportier in vaccinations. It pains me a little to say this, but it's so effective that you won't regret the manual transmission.

Easy and sincere

I bring Plate On my favorite road, the mixture of dense mixture, which gradually unfolds, is long and varied enough to capture (almost) every nuance of the car. I have to admit that the rear engine doesn't feel as strong and the nose never gives the impression of floating or spinning like an old 911. Targa is precise, firm and determined, and above all, it can be controlled how you want. , and not vice versa. All-wheel drive gives you an invisible hand and you never feel jerky or understeer. It’s only out of tight corners, with the throttle first engaged and fully open, that you can feel a system that causes the rear wheels to skid a little before transferring power to the front.

Le Pirelli P Zero 245/35 20 at the front and 305/35 20 at the rear provide excellent grip, even on wet roads. If the power is 4 HP The 420S is enough to question the rear end and cause some oversteer, then with a 4 you have to sweat up to seven shirts.

Exit tight corners in a second with wide open throttle and it will crouch, projecting you into the next corner, while the brakes take care of slowing down with exemplary agility and progression.

The steering is precise, direct and perfectly matches the character of the vehicle. He is not very detailed in giving you information, but he does tell you what it takes to be able to trust you.

Trust in fact it is a keyword 911It's so friendly, friendly and easy to drive - at any speed and in all weather conditions - that you can safely leave it to your wife for shopping, even if it's snowing.

findings

Only flaw Plate won't be available with rear-wheel drive only, otherwise little can be said. It is the sexiest 911 on the list, and the 4th guarantees the speed and convenience of day-to-day use just a hair short of a closed 911. IN motorway at 130 km / h there are no special rustles (even at high speeds) and with careful driving on a liter, it was possible to overcome more than 12 km.
