Porsche Cayenne S Diesel — oil booster

The perfect car. Prestigious, comfortable, well-made, insanely fast and surprisingly economical. Competent on the highway and serviceable on some really bad roads. We invite you on board the Porsche Cayenne S Diesel.

In 2009, Porsche began production of the Cayenne with a 3.0 V6 diesel engine. Orthodox sports car enthusiasts from Zuffenhausen roared with discontent. Not only is crude oil also not very dynamic. Now Porsche is taking it one step further: the second-generation Cayenne is available in the sporty S Diesel version.

Determining that a turbodiesel is running under the hood is an extremely difficult task. Typical knock? Nothing like this. The engine compartment is perfectly muffled, while the exhaust pipes gurgle, which the gasoline V8 would not be ashamed of. Only the name Cayenne S flaunts on the tailgate. Only the front fenders have a discreet inscription "diesel".

It is impossible to dwell on the appearance of the second generation Cayenne. It's just a beautiful SUV with details reminiscent of a Porsche family car. A massive door prevents access to the spacious cabin. There is enough space for five adults and 670 liters of luggage. With the rear bench seat folded down, you can get up to 1780 liters of cargo space. The ability to unfasten the protective net just behind the front seats and the load capacity of 740 kg allow you to really use the impressive volume.

Does anyone else say Porsche can't be practical?

Traditionally, the ignition switch should be located on the left side of the steering wheel. The quality and precision of manufacturing is at the highest level. Ergonomics are impeccable, though the labyrinth of buttons on the center console takes some getting used to.

Porsche, as befits a Premium brand, equips the Cayenne with everything you need as standard. Of course, the customer also receives an extensive catalog of options. Bigger wheels, ceramic brakes, a 100 liter fuel tank, leather upholstery, carbon inserts in the cabin, decorative exhaust tips… There are plenty to choose from and pay for. An option worth recommending is the air suspension, which absorbs bumps perfectly, and also allows you to change the clearance and damping force. It really works!

The lowered and paved Cayenne behaves like a sports car. Suspension settings take into account the presence of a heavy engine. As a result, despite the height of 1,7 meters and a curb weight of 2,2 tons, the Cayenne S Diesel corners with amazing grace. In the tightest corners, you feel that the front axle is weighted by a powerful turbodiesel, and the Cayenne's handling precision and sociability can be the envy of most compact cars. An interesting option for fans of fast cornering, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus is standard on the flagship Cayenne Turbo. By applying adequate braking to the rear wheels, PTV Plus optimizes torque distribution and increases the force with which the Cayenne enters corners. The test car did not need any special encouragement in order to rock back easily when exiting a corner dynamically. There is hardly a better way to remind the driver that he is dealing with a pure Porsche product and not an SUV like so many...

With more ground clearance, you can hit the less-traveled trail to a lakeside, mountain hut, or anywhere else without worrying about the condition of your bumpers or chassis. Four-wheel drive with a multi-plate clutch, locks and an advanced torque distribution system allows a lot. The fact that the Porsche Cayenne is not only a tabloid SUV is evidenced by the successful performances of the first generation of the model in the Trans-Siberian Rally.

Porsche provided two diesel engines for the Cayenne. Cayenne Diesel receives a 3.0 V6 unit that produces 245 hp. and 550 Nm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7,6 seconds. Who wants to go faster should invest in the option Cayenne S Diesel with diesel 4.2 V8. The twin-turbo presses out 382 hp. at 3750 rpm and 850 Nm in the range from 2000 to 2750 rpm. The design of the engine is known, among other things, the Audi A8 has been brought to perfection. The extra power (35 hp) and torque (50 Nm) come from increased boost pressure, a larger intercooler from the Cayenne Turbo, a new exhaust and a reprogrammed control computer. Porsche pays special attention to boost pressure - 2,9 bar - a record value for a serial turbodiesel.

The motor is paired exclusively with an eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission. This is a classic automatic transmission, not a dual-clutch transmission, so even when fully loaded, gear shifts are very smooth. Because of the monstrous torque, it was necessary to use a transmission technically similar to that used in the flagship Cayenne Turbo. The first gears are relatively short, which improves the dynamics. "Seven" and "eight" are typical overdrive gears that reduce fuel consumption when driving at high speed.

Can a powerful turbodiesel in a large and heavy SUV be economical? Of course! Porsche reports an average consumption of 8,3 l/100 km on the combined cycle. During test drives Cayenne S Diesel, which traveled along the winding roads of the Black Forest and German highways at speeds often exceeding 200 km/h, burned only 10,5 l/100 km. Excellent result!

If you feel pressure on your lips"but it's still a diesel, which in no case should be under the hood of a Porsche“Look at the specifications of the Cayenne S Diesel version. It's as fast as recently tested by the editors of AutoCentrum.pl. Porsche Cayenne GTS with a 4.8 V8 petrol engine with 420 hp. According to the manufacturer, both cars should accelerate to “hundreds” in 5,7 seconds. The Driftbox measurement showed that the Cayenne S Diesel is even slightly faster and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5,6 seconds.

The GTS can reach 160 km/h in 13,3 seconds and the S diesel in 13,8 seconds, but in everyday use, sprints from a standstill with the accelerator pedal pressed to the floor are rare, however. Flexibility is much more important. AT Porsche Cayenne S Diesel the problem of mixing with the jack has been solved by the manufacturer - the machine is only available with an automatic transmission. However, elasticity measurements can be made after switching on the manual mode of the Tiptronic S gearbox. We start the test in fourth gear at a speed of 60 km/h. In just 3,8 seconds, the speedometer shows 100 km/h. The Cayenne GTS takes 4,9 seconds for an identical exercise.

The ease with which the 2,2-ton giant changes speed is truly impressive. This makes the Cayenne S Diesel ideal for dynamic driving on highways and winding roads. We lightly touch the gas pedal, and 850 Nm provide a fairly intense return. Despite the acceleration of the seats, the cabin is idyllic calm. The Porsche Cayenne S Diesel seems to obey the driver's instructions without any effort. A well-designed chassis and excellent noise isolation reduce the feeling of speed. Only the landmark in the form of overtaken cars shows the dynamics of the Cayenne.

The way the gearbox selects gear ratios is also very impressive. The advanced controller shifts gears at optimal times based on the selected operating mode (Normal or Sport), as well as the pressure on the accelerator pedal and the speed at which the driver changes his position. For the sake of car stability, the gears do not change in corners - unless, of course, this is necessary. When braking hard, the gears change intensively, so that the Cayenne also brakes with the engine.

You can't say a bad word about the brakes themselves. The front is equipped with 6-piston calipers and discs with a diameter of 360 millimeters. At the rear are two smaller pistons and 330mm discs. The system is capable of providing huge delays. Thanks to the well-chosen stroke of the left pedal, it is not difficult to dose the braking force. However, the heavy weight and excellent performance of the Cayenne Diesel S were a real test for the braking system. Porsche has an ace up its sleeve - the optional ceramic brake discs, which, thanks to their exceptional resistance to overheating, are not afraid of even repeated high-speed braking.

A sport utility vehicle from the Porsche stable with a turbodiesel under the hood. Just ten years ago, the only correct response to such a slogan would have been a burst of laughter. Times (and cars) are changing very fast. Porsche has proven that it can create dynamic and well-controlled SUVs. The Cayenne S Diesel version is also fast enough not to complain about poor performance even after switching to the iconic Porsche 911. Price? From 92 583. Euro…
