Porsche invests in high-performance lithium-ion cells. Tesla will fight on more and more fronts

Tesla is considered to be the driving force behind the EV segment today. However, the position of the American manufacturer has been bitten from all sides. Porsche has just announced that it will spend “double-digit amounts [in millions of euros]” on investments in high-performance lithium-ion cells.

Porsche invests in Cellforce

We could expect such a message ever since Volkswagen Power Day 2021, when the Porsche President announced that the company wants to enter the lithium-ion battery market with maximum performance... The figure shows that the new cells will be rectangular (uniform format for the entire group) or cylindrical, from the current press release we learn that they will have Nickel Cobalt Manganese (NCM) cathodes and silicon anodes:

To meet this challenge, Porsche acquired Customcells Itzehoe and formed a new subsidiary called the Cellforce Group, in which Porsche owns 83,75% of the shares. Cellforce will be responsible for research, development, manufacturing, and finally, interestingly, the sale of high-performance cells. By 2025, the group of current 13 employees is expected to increase to 80 people, and it is also planned to build an electrolysis plant.

The cost of the entire initiative is 60 million euros (equivalent to 273 million zlotys). Ultimately mentioned the plant must achieve a minimum production capacity of 0,1 GWh of cells per year., which should be enough to equip 1 cars with a battery. This is not a very large number, so we assume it has more to do with launching a R&D center and acquiring know-how, or perhaps participating in car racing.
