Practical motorcycle: install a chain lubricator

Practical tips for maintaining your motorcycle

The last part of our saga, dedicated to the secondary transmission in a chain, we invite you here to see how and why to install an automatic oil filler.

Why do this?

Wear the part par excellence, the chain kit requires continuous maintenance to last over time. Severely stressed, it suffers from weather and weather disturbances that add to centrifugal force and dust, drying it out, effectively causing it to wear out quickly. Well stretched but not too much (see how to tighten the chain), well cleaned (see how to clean the chain) and finally well lubricated, a chain kit can last up to three or 4 times longer.

We know examples of chain kits that have covered 100 km per 000 cm1000! However, some do not exceed 3 km in length! When you know how much it costs and the maintenance that is required, especially in winter, is really serious, once and for all, could you please tell.

How does it work?

Our lubrication plant consists of a small vacuum tank / pump, pipes and various fastening clamps. There are also electric models. The basic principle is to work with oil only when the motorcycle is in motion. So we are, of course, a drop, but the contact is disconnected or the engine is off, everything stops. The lubricant used looks like chainsaw oil, which you can buy at a low price in the supermarket when you used the reserve supplied with the kit when you bought it. Know that with the right flow, a small reservoir will leave you about 4000 km of peace ... Whether it is rain, snow or windy. Then you only need to fill it without getting your hands dirty or lying on the floor. So convinced, ready to attack the editing? Went!

Assembly

1. The first step is to find a place where you can attach the tank. It should be as straightforward as possible and remain relatively easy to access, both for adjusting the flow rate and for regular refilling, even if it does not occur very often. If you need to raise the saddle or remove the side cover, that's ideal, but avoid too inaccessible places that will be painful in the long run, and let you ride with an empty tank….

2. The second step is to move the pipe from the drip chamber to the rear wheel, taking care not to burn it on the exhaust, so that it does not get stuck in the shock absorber or in the chain itself.

Ideally, to ensure perfect lubrication, set “Y” to diffuse oil on both sides of the bit and thus lubricate both sides of the chain for the greatest benefit of the O-rings.

Then we look for a vacuum socket to connect the pump. Typically, the ports for the depressiometer settings are used and are usually closed.

A vacuum tube is connected to the top of the tank.

The vent tube is disconnected using a filter tip, then the reservoir is filled with the supplied can.

We collect whatever was set aside for installation, then we start the engine, carefully adjust the flow rate by turning the wheel to the top of the reservoir to activate the primer, and then once the oil enters the crown, the flow rate is reduced to about one drop per minute.

Then it's over, we don't go back to it anymore, just to control the level and refuel it. Long live the chain kit!

Where to find and at what price?

The scooter we installed is available in all good distributors such as Reaction, as well as in Nantes in Motorcycle Village and Motorland, in Equipmoto at a price of 109,95 € TTC with 250 ml of supplied product.

Then a refill of 500 ml costs € 11,95 including VAT plus shipping (approx. 8,00). Therefore, it is better to take a refill when shopping or buy 2L of chainsaw oil near your home after that.

Cameleon Oiler also sold 135 euros (+ 7,68 euros shipping) delivered with 250 ml of oil on boutibike.com. It is electronic, and the adjustment is made by successive pressing of the button. It connects to the positive after contact and ground, so not directly on the battery, otherwise it will run continuously. For example, the taillights do this very well.
